I have had my new printer almost 7 months now. I've been having a continuing problem with it. It keeps wanting to print from tray 2. I first set it up in the software on my computer to select tray selection to automatic. That did not work so then I set it to print from Tray 1. That doesn't work either, still prints from tray 2. I've select it to print from tray 1 both in the printer setting and the software on the computer, that doesn't work either. Seems like the only way i can get it to work on tray 1 is to remove tray 2. Very frustrating. I keep tray one almost full of paper and tray 2 low on paper on purpose. It kept telling me that the paper tray was low, this is before I realized it was printing from tray 2. Even when I'm put photo paper in tray 1 and select tray one in the setting it still prints photos on tray two with pain paper in it. This is where it's really frustrating when printing photos, just wasting paper and ink. Seems to me it a software problem but I don't know for sure. Other than this one problem the printer works well. What can I do to fix this?

Hi @darrel112,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can understand how frustrating this is, especially when you’ve tried every setting and the printer still insists on using Tray 2. This issue with HP OfficeJet Pro 9130e and similar models and usually comes down to paper source priority settings or firmware behavior.

Here’s how to fix it:

Step 1: Check Paper Type Settings

On the printer:

  1. Go to Setup → Paper Handling → Tray Settings.
  2. Set Tray 1 to the correct paper type (e.g., Photo Paper or Plain Paper).
  3. Set Tray 2 to Plain Paper.
  4. Save changes.

Step 2: Set Tray Priority

  • On the printer: Setup → Preferences → Tray Priority → Select Tray 1 as priority.
  • In HP Smart or print driver settings:
    • Go to Printer Properties → Paper/Quality → Paper Source → Choose Tray 1.

Step 3: Update Firmware

This issue is often fixed in newer firmware:

Step 4: Use Photo Printing Workflow

When printing photos:

  • In HP Smart → Select Photo Print → Choose Tray 1 and correct paper type.
  • If the paper type doesn’t match, the printer will override your tray selection.

Step 5: Last Resort

If the printer still ignores tray settings:

  • Remove Tray 2 temporarily when printing photos.
  • Or set Tray 2 to Custom Size so the printer won’t use it for standard jobs.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
