HP Deskjet F380
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I had to reload Windows 10 to my Pavilion dv6 laptop which resulted in the HP Deskjet F380 apps being removed. Prior to the Windows problem the printer has been operating fine on Windows 10.

When downloading the drivers for HP All in One F300 from HP Support and running exe, repeatedly get a failure Fatal Error Invalid Drive G:\ and text advising me to search support about Fatal Error and MSI.netdevicemanager40. This does not get me to any clear answer.

Drive G was a Seagate External Hard Drive which in recent times has malfunctioned. It is no longer connected to the Laptop. I am guessing, when it worked the drivers were moved or copied over to it and some setting is telling the laptop to look for it. So, is this a registry problem?

Can anyone advise me on how to correct this. I have never edited registry before.

I can download the drivers to a HP Mini and operate the All in One, but it is very slow so need to get it operational on my laptop again.

Thanks in anticipation.

Thank you The_Fossette and Jeet_Singh for your contributions.

I have resolved the problem. As stated previously I was puzzled that the error each time told me that G:\ was invalid.
I checked each of the directory folders in (Windows 10) This PC and found one named Pictures. The properties told me its path was G:\Pictures. This is the only folder pointing to G:\.

I updated its mapping to Default, which changed the path to C:\Users\.

I ran the install program again. It ran much further that time but failed much later during the install. The error log revealed  an error msi 1603 (more telling than I had seen previously).
Armed with that info I repeated some of the earlier steps advised, cleared TEMP, emptied Recycle bin, etc., restarted, ran ReImage and checked all Windows Updates were in place, ran the HP Printer Install software for the umteenth time, and it worked.

I can now use the All in One from this machine again.

I have to guess why this problem arose.

Last year my laptop was out of disk space. One of the largest directories was Pictures. So I had moved it (by drag and drop) to my external drive (G:). Meanwhile, the external drive failed and has not been used for many months. I was left with the loss of all my earlier digital pictures. Everything else seemed fine. I had got in to the habit of filing my new pictures in a directory on the C:/ drive.

The problem was revealed only in the reinstall of Windows 10. Somewhere in the registry it was trying to tell the HP Printer scanner to put Pictures in G. Which the install routine did not like.

PS: A cloud has a silver lining. I have found all my old pictures in a Cloud back up that had been running from the defunct G drive and my current C drive.

@JoeSoapUK,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are facing issues installing the printer on your computer.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • When was the last time the printer was working fine?
  • Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting?

While you respond to that, I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it resolves the issue.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Restart the PC

14.) Download and install the printer software from the below link.

http://hp.care/2nikIQ9

15.) Connect the USB cable ONLY when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!

Cheers!

Thank you The_Fossette for taking the trouble to help.  Sadly, I had a good day, it looked better on seeing your reply, but the route did not get a solution.

Dealing with some clarification, the printer (All in One) works fine. It did so until I had to reload Windows 10 and it still does so if I plug in to HP mini. Only, I mainly need to use it connected to the laptop.

The problem is around re-installing the software and drivers to my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop which is running the latest reinstalled Windows 10.

The file I am downloading is AIO_CDB_NonNet_Full_Win_WW_140_408-4.exe taken from the HP Support website.

In your proposal, steps 1 - 3 I have done several times. In addition, when I get the error, the software is removed and system cleanup takes place.

I followed your steps 4 - 14.

At 14, this failed: Namecheap.com stated the domain had only recenly been registrered and did not give me a download link.

So I used the official site https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-deskjet-f300-all-in-one-printer-series/1129389/m....

From this download, I have Run, seen files extract, install start with check system, prepare system, review install options (I do not need Shop for HP Supplies/OCR for IRIS/HP Photo Creations/Bing Bar so unselected those) Accepted Terms, seen system check for updates, go into Install Software then after 2-3 minutes the MSI.netdevicemanager40 window pops up.

I have also rerun all the steps again but left in all the install options, to same effect.

'MSI.netdevicemanager40' box says

Invalid Drive G:\

then advises contact the support website searching for Fatal Error and MSI.netdevicemanager40

When I click OK on the window it proceeds to Uninstall, report, message HP support then cleanup.

It seems something is pointing the MSI file to a non-existant Drive G. Which was once attached to the laptop and to which I previously sent scanned photos and documents.

I have been through the Support pages and cannot find an exact reference to MSI.netdevicemanager40

Going back to my original question, I took a look at regedit and found three references to HP Printer F300. As the device is now uninstalled, I took the plunge and deleted those references. I have restarted the laptop, run through the re-install process again and reached exactly the same point again with MSI.netdevicemanager40.

In support documents I have now found instructions for

Re-register the MSIExec service and

Reregister the ATL.DLL file

I have no understanding of what these mean.

Is this the way to go?

@JoeSoapUK,

It looks like you were interacting with @The_Fossette, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out,
I'm the Jeet_Singh & I'm at your service.

Let's try to check if the Windows is up to date, If you have problems installing the Windows updates, go to the Microsoft website and use the Windows Update troubleshooter.

Then, restart the computer and run Windows Update again.

Windows 10 update troubleshooter (in English)

Once the computer is up to date, let's do a root level uninstall and reinstall of the printer software. If for some reason, you get an error that it's already in use, close all the programs and restart the computer and then follow these steps again.

·         First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

·         Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP DeskJet printer entries and uninstall them.

·         Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

·         Restart your computer.

·         Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.

·         Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.

·         Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".

·         Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says, “Unknown device”.

·         Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.

·         Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

·         Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

·         Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.

·         Now restart your computer again.

·         Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.

·         Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.

·         Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.

·         Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.

·         Click on https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/djF300/AIO_CDB_NonNet_Full_Win_WW_140_408-4.exe  and install the software.

·         Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

If you are still facing the issues to remove the driver, then try using a 3rd party software removal applications like "Revo uninstaller" or "Wise" to completely remove the programs.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

Hi Jeet_Singh, thank you for your additional support. Sorry I have been busy away from computer for a couple of days and I am concerned for your eager waiting. I have followed all your steps.

Windows 10 is up to date.
USB for printer is not connected.
Settings/ Apps have no HP Printer references.
Control Panel Devices/ Printers and Scanners has no HP Printers.
Device Manager (with Show Hidden Devices) had no HP Printer references, no print queues.
In printui.exe /s there are no HP Printer lines.
In c:/programdata I deleted all HP printer related files.
I used %temp% to check for all temp files
Restarted Computer
In services.msc
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) set start up to Auto and started service.
In Function Discovery Provider Host, started service.
In Function Discovery Resource Publication, started service.

Ran the install procedure and got to the exact same failure.

I still cannot understand why the install is looking for Drive G.

I found an alternative supposed solution, at https://appuals.com/fatal-error-msi-netdevicemanager40/, which also failed at the same point of install.

I can use the Deskjet from another notebook, but it is very inconvenient to transfer the scanned documents to the laptop where I do most of my work.

Where to now? Any other solution would be appreciated.
