I have not been able use my ReadIris software with my HP 7440 printer/scanner.

A. Attempts to scan with ReadIris Pro 17 resulted in various error messages.  The messages read, thus:

1. Cannot open Twain SourceManager

2.  HP TWAIN: Scanner communication cannot be established.  (this dialogue results in several suggestions, i.e. check the cable connection, Update the IP Address, configure the firewall, etc. )

3. See attached screenshots.

B. Email conversations with ReadIris Help have told me to reinstall / update the drivers for the printer/scanner.  I did this and resinstalled the ReadIris software.  Nothing changed, still getting the same error messages.

C. I found a conversation titled, "Scanner issues after upgrade to Windows 11".  This seems to offer a solution that appears to work, at least for the present.  It says to restart the WIA Service (Windows Image Acquisition).

1. See the post at:  https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-Copying/Scanner-issues-after-upgrade-to-Windows-11/td-...

2. The post is by Curtx, January 17, 2022.

I will continue with this solution to see if it works.  My latest email conversation makes a point that if I cannot get ReadIris Pro 17 to work on my computer, then they need to refund my purchase price.  The technician agreed while noting that the problem was outside of the scope of their support!

I thought this was odd in that it is basically saying their product doesn't work.

If I get a better solution, I will return to edit this conversation.

Thanks.

Hi @Michael-Tulsa,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand the inconvenience you're facing trying to use your Readiris Pro 17 software with the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer, especially following your upgrade to Windows 11. I appreciate the detailed explanation and the troubleshooting steps you’ve already taken.

Please note that while we do our best to assist with hardware-related concerns and basic functionality of HP printers and scanners, third-party software like Readiris Pro 17 is outside the direct scope of HP technical support. That said, we want to help to the best of our ability and offer some basic steps and suggestions that might improve compatibility and functionality.

Recommended Basic Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Ensure Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service is Running:
You mentioned restarting WIA helped—great step! Please ensure it's set to start automatically:
    • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Scroll down and double-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
    • Set Startup type to Automatic, click Start, and then click OK.

  2. Use the HP Scan Software (for testing):
  3. Check Scanner Driver (TWAIN/WIA) Installation:
  4. Use the Printer’s IP Address (For Network Scanners):
    • Open Readiris > Scanner Settings.
    • Manually enter the IP address of the printer/scanner instead of relying on auto-detection.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

VikramThe Great:

You are a great communicator, thanks.

Prior to your reply to my post, I had done your steps 1 thru 4.  Also, please note that my post is more about the HP 7740 than it is about the ReadIris software.  ReadIris software only demonstrates that the Twain SourceManager cannot be opened, nor can it be found.  Also as presented in another post, I cannot find the TWAIN Download and Installation Wizard.

Of your recommendations:

1. WIA is running and set to Automatic Start.

2. The HP Scan Software works, as tested.  The ReadIris is working, as of today, via WIA, not TWAIN.

3. For TWAIN scanner driver, I am unable to check installation.  The full-feature software and drivers cannot be installed, installation dialogues note an error. (Installation includes the use of the original disk, as required by the dialogues.)  It is possible that I have already installed it in the last day or two.  (Note that the HP Scan Software works, as noted in #2 above.  Otherwise, I do not know how to confirm that the full-feature software and drivers (dtd 5/25/25) have been installed.

4.  Note that ReadIris works, see #2, above.

My post is about using the HP TWAIN scanner model or drivers, which I seem to be unable to do.  The other post that I have written is titled, HP Scan Twain Setup Wizard Can't Be Foundand found at:

Thanks.
