I have a brand new HP Officejet 200Mobile printer - straight out of the box. Printed the test page so far
On inserting the first cartridge - a ticking sound started and hasn't stopped since
it also scrolls the screen rapidly - so impossible to input anything with any accuracy - or set up the wifi
Tried unplugging - left for an hour - same
Tried reset (as per this web site) - pressed the lower left key x4 - same
Any other ideas other than return it?

Hi @yorkeyes,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for reaching out, and I totally get how frustrating it is to have issues with a brand-new HP Officejet 200 Mobile printer, especially right out of the box.
From what you’ve described—the ticking noise and screen rapidly scrolling—it sounds like a possible hardware or startup issue.
You’ve already tried the right steps (power cycle and factory reset), so if it’s still acting up with no response, this isn’t normal for a new printer.
Please try this quick reset one more time with the cartridge removed:
- Power off the printer and disconnect all cables, including power.
- Wait 2–3 minutes.
- With the printer unplugged, remove the ink cartridge.
- Plug the power back in and turn on the printer without the cartridge inserted.
- If the screen stabilizes, insert the cartridge again and observe.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Vikram
It's not possible to do as you instruct as if you disconnect the printer from power, you cannot access the cartridges. I did the next best thing which was to open the front so that the cartridges can be accessed, then disconnected the printer - took the cartridges out - waited, plugged it in with no cartridges, (no change) re-inserted the cartridges (no change).
