I am trying to help a senior set up an Officejet 8022 printer he got as a donation. It will not print with the included cartidges (instant ink). I tried to install hp smart but could not set up an instant ink account as the default region was the USA and I am in Canada. Possibly the problem started when I accepted English(USA) as the language. Or it may be that the cartridges are from the USA. Recommended action in virtual assistant was to delete the USA account. Cannot find any way to delete account. Cannot find any way to change region. Baffled and tired of running round and round looking for actual help. Since I have not installed instant ink the printer is useless. Usage will be relativaely small so it would be cheaper to buy a laser printer rather than the inkjet cartridges ($180 or so) No way to know if the cartidges are region locked to the USA, the account is in the USA, or something else is wrong. I don't see any indication that Smart app for PC is selected by region but it also doesn't gave any way to set the region. And no way to set the country is the instantink shipping (counry is grayed out). Can't get there from here.

Hi @isinjun,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
I see that you are looking for help with moving your instant ink account to another country.
Instant Ink accounts are linked to the country/region of your HP account.
- To change the country/region for a printer in Instant Ink, add the printer to a different HP account that is in the desired country/region.
- Cancel the original Instant Ink account to prevent continued billing. Enrolling the printer in a new account does not automatically delete the old account.
- HP Instant Ink Platinum: The service is only available within the continental United States. If you move out of the service area, your subscription is cancelled and you may be charged an early cancellation fee.
Refer to this video link to Cancel the Instant ink subscription.
Refer to this link to re-enroll in instant ink for the new country once again.

I do not have an instant ink account since I cannot set one up that accepts a Canadian address.. I have no idea who had the printer and whether they had an instant ink account. I cannot tell whether the instant ink acartridgeds are region locked to to the US or Canada. I cannot tell if I have set up a Smart Print account in the USA. The only clue is that it will only accept a US address when I try to sign up for instant ink.. I am certainly not being billed for instant ink as I have not been able to sign up fo it.
The problem is that I don't KNOW anything and cannot find out. Repeating the steps that didn't work before won't solve this. This printer was donated by anonymous. No information is available to me. The problem is that I cannot USE the current cartidges (presumabled to be instant ink because message says must be linked to print) or set up an account with instant ink for Canada.
How did the account get set to the USA? I am in Canada and installed smart print. At no time was I asked where I resided. At no time was I given an option to select region.

Hi @isinjun,
Thank you for sharing the above information.
Lets try to get the printer setup first in your account but before that we will have to setup the hardware.
Please share the image of the ink cartridges that are installed on your printer by removing them out.
If they are instant ink cartridges, you wont be able to use them and you will have to purchase regular ink cartridges either from store or HP online that are compatible with your printer to resume printing.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

Hello Irwin6.
Due to the cost of a complete new set of cartridges and some ill health of the reciipient (back surgerya year ago, has bad days) , I have not been able to implement this solution yet. Sorry for the delay.
What I get by implication is that the cartidges are probably US (maybe) instant ink which is why I cannot open a canadian account in Smart Print, and that generic store bought cartidges must be installed in order to register for instant ink in Canada (another post hinted that you cannot order instant ink without cartidges installed, normally the ones that were included new).
I will report on success/failure of this solution and images of the cartidges when I can. Right now, the owner doesn't have the $180 or so for a complete set of new cartidges as he is of limited income;. Next month, maybe.
