Can you please provide the steps required to reset the Administration password on the HP Smart Tank 790.

I am assuming it will require a factory/default reset, which is fine, but how can it be done?

There should be an easier way to reset the password when one has access to the physical printer.

Hi @NAUAE,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are trying to reset the administration password on the HP Smart Tank 790, a factory reset is typically required. This process will restore the printer to its default settings, including the administration password. Here's how you can perform the reset:

Steps to Factory Reset the HP Smart Tank 790:

Power on the Printer:

  • Ensure the printer is powered on and in a ready state.

Access the Printer's Control Panel:

  • Navigate to the Settings menu using the touch display.

Locate the Reset Option:

  • Go to Printer Maintenance or Settings > Restore Factory Defaults (the exact path may vary).
  • Select Restore Defaults or Reset Settings.

Confirm the Reset:

  • Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the factory reset.
  • The printer will reboot and reset all settings, including the administration password.

Reconfigure the Printer:

  • After the reset, you'll need to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network and reconfigure any other custom settings.
  • The administration password will now be reset to its default (usually blank or a default password listed in the manual).

Alternative Method (Hard Reset):

If you can't access the control panel or settings, follow these steps:

Turn off the Printer.

Press and Hold Specific Buttons:

  • Simultaneously press and hold the Resume button (triangle inside a circle) and the Power button.
  • Continue holding the buttons for approximately 20 seconds until the printer powers on and displays a reset confirmation.

Release the Buttons:

  • Once the reset is complete, the printer will restart.

Reconnecting to HP Smart App HP printer setup (HP Smart app)

  1. Reinstall the printer in the HP Smart app to reestablish the connection.
  2. Follow the app's prompts to complete the setup.

Refer to this document:  https://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c07762950.pdf refer page 120 for reset

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
