Hi @TomTit007,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Envy 600 series printer is showing a message that the indicated cartridges can only be used in a printer enrolled in HP Instant Ink.

There may be an issue with the connection or cartridge setup. Here’s what you can try to resolve it:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:

Check Internet Connection:

  • Make sure your printer is connected to the internet. An active connection is necessary for Instant Ink cartridges. Check the Wi-Fi connection on your printer’s control panel, ensuring the Wi-Fi light is solid blue, indicating a stable connection.

Re-seat the Ink Cartridges:

  • Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges to ensure they are seated correctly.

    • Open the cartridge access area.
    • Wait until the carriage is idle.
    • Remove each cartridge and then reinsert it, pushing it until it snaps into place.

Check Printer Enrollment:

  • Verify that your printer is still enrolled in the Instant Ink program. You can check this in your HP account by visiting HP Smart.

  • Ensure there are no issues with your account or billing that might affect the enrollment status.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Keeping your printer's firmware updated is crucial for functionality with Instant Ink.

    • You can update the firmware via the printer control panel, HP Smart app, or directly from the Official HP® Support under the "Software and Driver Downloads" section.

Reset Web Services:

  • Open the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS) using the printer's IP address.

  • Go to the Web Services tab and reset the Web Services connection. Follow prompts to enable it again.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

You are welcome @TomTit007

It looks like you’ve already worked through a tricky Instant Ink situation on your HP Envy 600 series. The message about “cartridges can only be used in a printer enrolled in HP Instant Ink” usually means the printer isn’t confirming its enrollment status with HP’s servers. That’s why inserting the original cartridges allowed you to get back online—those standard cartridges don’t require the Instant Ink validation handshake.

For future reference, here are the key points to keep in mind if this happens again:

Why Instant Ink Cartridges Show That Error

  • Enrollment Check: Instant Ink cartridges are tied to your subscription and printer’s serial number. If the printer can’t verify enrollment, it blocks usage.
  • Internet Dependency: A stable Wi-Fi connection is essential. Without it, the printer can’t confirm with HP’s servers.
  • Firmware & Account Sync: Outdated firmware or account issues (like billing lapses) can cause the mismatch.

Steps to Prevent the Error

  • Keep Firmware Updated: Regularly check for updates via the printer’s control panel or HP Smart app.
  • Verify Enrollment: Log into your HP Smart account and confirm your printer is listed as enrolled in Instant Ink.
  • Maintain Internet Connection: Ensure the Wi-Fi light is solid blue. If you move the printer or change routers, reconnect it promptly.
  • Web Services Reset: If the printer seems stuck, reset Web Services from the Embedded Web Server (EWS) using the printer’s IP address.

If you ever need to reset or troubleshoot again, keep a set of standard HP cartridges handy. They’ll let you bypass Instant Ink temporarily so you can restore connectivity and re-sync enrollment.
