HP LaserJet 1536dnf MFP

Same exact issue as another user:

We purchased some used printers for work. They all came with preset security codes that we cannot crack. The copy and print functions work fine but fax and scan functions ask for password.  I understand that there is a fix, but it is not located on the Forums. Please help! We really need the multi-function capabilities. Thanks!

Hi @INEEDAHELP247 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are trying to reset the password on an HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer and regain access to fax and scan functions, you can try the following steps:

1. Factory Reset via the Printer's Control Panel

  • On the printer’s control panel, press the Setup button (the wrench icon).
  • Use the arrow buttons to navigate to Service, then press OK.
  • Navigate to Restore Defaults, and press OK.
  • This will restore the printer to its factory default settings, including clearing any security passwords that have been set.

2. Reset Password Using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If the printer is networked, you can try resetting the password via the Embedded Web Server:

  • Find the printer's IP address on the control panel under Network Setup.
  • Open a web browser on a computer connected to the same network and enter the printer’s IP address.
  • In the Embedded Web Server, navigate to the Security tab.
  • If you're prompted for a password and don't know it, you may need to perform a factory reset (as mentioned above) to clear the password.

3. Reset via HP Utility Software

  • If the above methods do not work, try using HP’s printer management software. Download and install the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) or HP Printer Assistant for your model from HP’s support website.
  • Once installed, open the software, navigate to the Tools or Settings section, and look for an option to reset the printer or reset network settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Gaya1239, thanks for responding. This didn't work for me. I went to Setup, navigated to Service, and a password is required. There is no option to reset to default or anything. Same thing happens when I try to access the printer's IP address. Password required. Can you send me something to help me factory reset without needing a password? Printer is connected to computer via USB, not network connected.
