Reset password for tank 2504dw

How do I reset the password for the Tank 2504dw? 

I see the pin/password on the inside of the tank refill door. Using "admin" as username & that number, I am still not able to log into the printer. I can see some info in the web UI when I simply type the IP of the printer into the URL bar of the browser, but when I click on the System tab, and then on the button that takes me to my printer settings, I am asked to log in.

How can I reset the username & password? If possible, I'd also like to install the latest drivers, as I see there is an update from when I installed this printer a year ago.

If you are out of warranty or have difficulty contacting an agent, you might consider asking Microsoft's Copilot

Be sure to identify the printer as Laserjet, Officejet or Deskjet, as some model names are identical but the printer is different. Be sure to ask Copilot for videos. Copilot has access to features and information that might be missing from the older HP manuals available on the web.

You can still connect to the network even without the password.

Watch the reset video. After resetting, you generally have 2 hours to complete the setup. Decide if you want to connect the printer to the router or to print directly to the printer and bypass the router.

Many HP and other OEM printers have problems with the router when the router has two bands and both bands have the same name (SSID). Log into the modem and rename one of the bands. Alternately, contact your ISP and have them rename a band.

Or simply use Wi-Fi direct.

If English is not your native language or if you wish to get additional information not covered below, then use the HP and Microsoft support assistants. The latest HPSA supports 36 languages and can be downloaded here. Microsoft's AI assistant is in the latest Windows 10 and 11 releases and there are instructions here on how to enable the AI. Microsoft's AI assistant (Copilot) has a microphone button and supports natural language processing.

You may need to reset your printer.

Disconnecting the USB cable may still leave the printer in the wired or Wi-Fi mode. Connecting an ethernet cable may still leave the printer in Wi-Fi mode. The Wi-Fi reset is used to put Wi-Fi printers into setup mode. Some printers have a semi-reset, a full reset and a factory reset. Please refer to the user manual to find the difference. Some resets are simple and others require a video to understand. Factory resets cannot be revealed in this forum. To do a factory reset of your printer, you must contact HP.

Wi-Fi connection

Ideally, your Wi-Fi printer should connect to the modem or router. If your network has multiple boosters / repeaters, it is possible the printer may connect randomly to any of the units. The router needs to provide the same IP address on every connection. This rarely happens with random connects. An alternate Wi-Fi connection is Wi-Fi direct. Your laptop or smartphone prints directly to the printer and does not go through the router.

Wi-Fi Direct is explained on page 15 of the User Manual, this Wi-Fi setup avoids configuring the router.
A simple connection to the router can be done by using the WPS pushbutton method. This is explained on page 5 in this User Manual.

Software

HP updates software periodically. Downloads shown below may be old. You should always visit the Software and Download page to look for new releases. You may need to select an operating system (OS) first. If windows 11 is missing then use 10. You can go as far back as Windows 7, 64bit to get missing drivers. After selecting the OS click the blue Open all button to view all downloads.

You can find all of the software here: 2504dw. You should select the OS and then look for the phrase "Open All" and click that. Drivers from Windows 7 and up are usually compatible with the latest Windows OS.

Thanks, HP wanted to charge me $20 because it was out of warranty. I found a video on youtube that showed how to reset to factory settgings.

That was the same video I listed earlier..

Basically the suggestion was to uninstall HP Smart and reset the printer again to put it into Wi-Fi setup mode.

Your printer has USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi  but unless I am mistaken, only one type of connection is allowed.  If you plan to use Wi-Fi make sure it is not connected with USB or Ethernet when you reset it.

If you connect to the router you do not have to download any drivers.  You select "printers and scanners" then select "find printer". Once windows 11 finds the printer it will download drivers automatically.  It will download only the basic printer drivers.  You will have to manually download the scanner drivers for the more advanced full function drivers.

Did you set a password to access the printer?  Unfortunately, for problem with passwords you will need to contact an HP agent.

Here is HP's official policy regarding BIOS passwords:

According to the Community's Rules of Participation:

4d. No posts shall include instructions or directions intended to bypass or subvert security measures, including passwords, locking mechanisms, fingerprint scans, etc., or to bypass any safety measures.

This includes reset advice on printers where the reset erases passwords. Check the User or Service manual of your system for reset instructions or ask Copilot.

If you did not set a password then examine the password on the printer carefully.

The password may be misinterpreted. For example: ilL1oO0D8B5S are easily mixed up depending on the font used when printing the label

Well thanks for hanging in there with me. 🙂

The information page I just printed says, "Custom user password set." 

Copilot & Gemini just give me tips to reset the settings, which I already did.

I thought after all this wrangling with the printer, that I uninstalled it, rebooted, and then reinstalled the drivers. Shouldn't that have eliminated any password? 

HP wants 20 bucks to help me. I was hoping I could get some help a bit cheaper.
