Hi
The most convenient way to scan using our OfficeJet 8720 is using the 'Scan to Computer' function at the printer and selecting the relevant device to scan to. That works really well on our older devices that can still run the 'HP Utility' driver. However, the Scan to Computer function can't see any of our newer devices, which connect using the HP Smart app. They can all print wirelessly and scan using the HP Easy Scan app, but that is more fiddly to use.
The printer says to activate 'Scan to Computer' using HP Utility. That option is available for the older devices but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to do that in HP Smart. The only option in advanced settings for Scan to Computer is 'webscan'. HP Utility doesn't appear to be available anymore to download.
Is there a way to activate this using HP Smart? If not, why not?
Thanks

Perhaps I wasn't clear - the only software and drivers currently available for the device, i.e. HP Smart, does not enable this feature. It only appears to be available on the older, no longer downloadable, HP Utility.

On your printer HP support website:
Select "Software, Drivers and Firmware",
Select "Click here for more drivers",
Select "Software-Utility",
Install "HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Print and Scan Driver and Accessories".

Hi
Thanks for trying to help but was this a process you checked first or did you just guess what might be there? The support page below has only two options available. Either download and install HP Smart or under the 'Driver' section you can download 'HP Easy Start'. However, if you try the second option, once it's downloaded and opened, it takes you to a dead-end message saying 'We have a better software option available for you. Install HP Smart...' You only have the option to 'get software' which takes you on a perpetual loop that always ends at HP Smart. We don't want HP Smart as it is the buggy new software that deactivates the scan-to-computer option we were previously able to use.
If you are aware of any different options, which you have tested for accuracy, I'd love to hear them.

Number of displayed options seems to depend on "Detected operating system".
What OS is detected in your case?
Perhaps you can "Choose a different OS".
HP Smart does not support scan-to-computer.
"HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Print and Scan Driver and Accessories" software adds it.

Thanks for the suggestion. My actual OS is Mac OS Monterey 12.5.1. I've tried all the available Mac OS options in the 'change operating system' menu but they are all variations of either HP Smart or HP Easy Start which all loop back to the same issue. I've also tried looking on 123.hp.com (only HP Smart available) and tried downloading the older HP drivers package from the apple support site (incompatible with OS).
A colleague, who migrated her older laptop to a brand new one with the same operating system as me, can get the utility to work because she still has the utility installed from her older set-up but she doesn't have the .dmg file to install it from scratch.
