So, I have the Officejet 4630.  Was working fine for a good couple months since I purchased computer.  Then all of the sudden, The Icon for the printer and in the start file disappeared.  I am still able to print however have no place to run scan.  Tried the HP scan doctor about a couple dozen times, no luck.  Uninstalled, reloaded drivers, etc.  When I click on the HP icon, it ask if I want to let allow changes to my computer.  Nothing was down loaded I guess.  as it runs through the connection options (wireless) shows my model with IP, mac, and network type.  then starts to install printer, then says can't connect to printer---yet I can still print to it????  Scan docter says the issue can be solved I need to go to website, which did and no help.

Easy method - might work...

Try this version of the Doctor - it is sometimes a bit better about handling this sort of issue...

Offline Doctor V5.0.6

  HPPSdr_5.0.6.exe

  • Download and Save the doctor to your computer
  • Open File Explorer > Navigate to the folder in which you saved the file (likely Downloads)
  • Execute the doctor – Answer any prompts /  let the process complete
  • Restart the computer, log in, and wait for the final steps in the Doctor to finish.
  • Check for any difference.

NOTES – Contributed by ShlomiL

Paraphrased

Connection Issues

  • Print and Scan Doctor Version 5.0.6 creates a secondary queue for printing with TCP/IP port.

Side Bar - Ignore if not needed... Loss of Color Printing

  • If the color printing is not yet offered, try printing using the newly added print queue.
  • Verify results, then set the newly added printer as the default.

Details TKB article: Windows10 - No Color option available when printing to a network connected printer

Check

If necessary, Adjust the “Default” printing device (Default Printer)

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer NOT marked as “Scan Only / DO NOT DELETE”

Set printer as Default

Example – Printers listed in Devices and Printers

Set “Default” Printer = HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series PCL-3

NOT Default = Scan Only -HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series PCL-3 (Network)-DO NOT DELETE

==============================================================================

Possible Explanation - Optional

"Something" in Windows (possibly Updates, but it could be something else) has chomped on the Full Feature Software (printer software).  The "chomp" has left the printer software in a less-than-perfect condition.

In particular, the printer software is five years old at this writing - the software is likely still functional in Windows 10, but cracks might be forming in the foundation due to normal changes in your Operating System.

You can still print perhaps because when all else falls into the bucket, Windows print drivers can provide basic print function.

The printer software is not able (or being asked) to uninstall before reinstalling a working version of the Printer Assistant.  Calling the Printer Assistant, because it is "broken", loops around to the "Gee, Want to install / set up the software?"  Then it fails - perhaps due to the aforementioned "broken" software link or perhaps due to the type of printer connection (we are wanting to switch the connection type to TCP/IP).

NOTE:  Printer Assistant is that icon shortcut on the Desktop - named for the printer - that usually (should) open the software for print and scan.

Thank you for responding.  This most likely way over my head....but I tried the HP doctor link...it gives me 2 photos of 2 different printers with the same name.  I tried to the 1 that is installed, but has same name as mine but different photos, it ran test and printer is fine---no scanning option.  then I tried the The printer picture of the printer I have and is not installed.  I keep getting hung up on the network wireless----Unsuccessful network installation"....yet for some reason it sees it in the option I have select before it reads it.

leaving me in tyhe same place i was when i clicked you link for older version of the scan doctor.

OK..

Well, "optional" reading and typing on the fly is always a risk.  I don't always explain things clearly, I guess.

Uninstall the printer software - then circle back and check / remove instances of the printer in various locations.

Installation – Full Feature Software

This is where you will use your downloaded printer software

  • Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

NOTES

If using USB, disconnect the USB cable between the printer and the computer before starting the installation.  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (toward the end of the installation procedure).

Both the HP Smart Application and the Full Feature Software can be installed on the same computer – when available, the Full Feature Software should be installed first (and the computer should be restarted).

Method - Create TCP IP port

** Install – Optional - Port Issues - Create a TCP/IP port **

TCP/IP can resolve odd connection, scanning, and installation problems.

Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by  greenturtle

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, Right-Click the printer and Left-Click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:
Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

One more thing, I down loaded the app on phone and scan works there.  Meaning printer is scanning docs to my phoe.  This is not a fix but it tells me its computer related.

Yes, I am sorry I did not make that clear.

The printer software on the computer is not working / broken / disconnected.

Perhaps completely removing the printer software on the computer and then reloading it will help.

If the software uninstalls then loads but still balks, try the instructions to change / switch the connection type to TCP/IP.

Sorry non of the option are working you provided me.  Again I know the printer is fine as my I phone is directing the scanning and my computer still prints to it....So its a soft ware issure that will not allow it to down load the program....
