HP Envy 5010
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

I was using non HP Cartriges in my HP Envy 5010 since I first purcased it in october 2020.  Suddenly, a few weeks ago when changing the cartridges, the printer would not recognize them any more (same supplier and type as always).  So I returned the printer to the shop, they returned me another one but with the same problem.  So once again I returned the printer to the shop (again clearly stating the problem) and they returned me another example, still with the same problem.  So I did a little research of my own and that's how  I discoverd the "HP cartridge protection" option.

Now, my problem is that I cannot setup the printer as it does not recognize the cartridges (and will not continue the setup), and I cannot switch off the "HP cartridge protection" option as long as the printer is not configured (and connected to my wifi) ...

Any suggestions ?

Best Regards,

Hans

@HanzieV, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

To assist you better, what is the exact error message?

Is it asking for the setup ink cartridges?

HP does not recommend the use of non-HP ink cartridges. It may or may not work.

If the printer is looking for setup ink cartridges, we can try to perform an OOB reset.

Hi Kumar0307,

thank you for your reply.

The exact message is: Remove an reinstall the indicated cartridge, makinig sure it is correctly installed.

As for the "HP does not recommend the use of non-HP ink cartridges. It may or may not work." remark, I have been using non HP cartridges for years now, not only in this device (HP 5010) but also in another one (HP Envy 4526), never had any problem.  As I wrote before, the problem with this device started after changing the cartridges.  First I thaught it was just a bad cartridge, so I opened another one and then yet another one, all with the same result.  After sending the printer back to the supplier for 2 times, they confirmed me by mail that this problem is caused by HP itself, rejecting non-HP cartridges.

I can still use the non-HP cartridges in my Envy 4526 because I turned off the HP Cartridge Protection in the settings.  Now I would like to do the same with the Envy 5010, but I have no access to the settings as I cannot connect the printer to my WiFinetwork.  As soon as I turn on the printer, it checks the cartridges and will not continue the setup.

@HanzieV

This issue is not related to the 'cartridge-protection' feature. Make sure you do not update the printer firmware if you wish to continue using non-HP inks.

This printer is enabled with dynamic security. It is intended to be used only with cartridges with an original HP chip. Cartridges using a non-HP chip might not work, and those that work today may not work in the future. Refilled or remanufactured supplies that still use an Original HP chip will continue to be accepted by the printer.

If you are using a refilled or remanufactured cartridge and wish to continue to do so, then you should check with your cartridge supplier as to whether or not the cartridge has an Original HP chip.

For more info, refer to - Dynamic Security Enabled Printers

Kindly use HP ink cartridges to resolve this issue. You may visit Hp Store to order compatible ink cartridges or buy them at a local store nearby.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
