I recently installed the HP drivers and software from the HP site that were supposed to work with Mac OS 10.15 Catalina.  Among many other problems with these drivers and software is that now my HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 will not shut down and I must unplug it to complete shutdown.  HP, do you know about this problem?  I should not be having to ask other customers how to fix this when it is you that produced the device and the software.

@Retired-06, Welcome to HP Support Community!

I understand you have issues with printer hardware and drivers. Let us first try to fix the hardware issue.

Try a power reset

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates.

For more information, go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

The power reset fixed the shutoff problem.  Still have all the other scanning problems I mentioned before.  The link below to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads says it is unavailable.  I tried going to the direct driver site for my 7740, but the driver there is the same one HP released October 9th.  Hoping for a fix soon.

I understand the inconvenience caused. I would recommend you to go through a similar post that speaks about the scanning issues after Mac OS update.

Also, try using the HP Smart App to scan. Refer to the document HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Mac) for help.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
