I purchased my Smart Tank 5100 a couple of months ago and the printer doesnt want to turn on.  I use the button, I try different devices, and the only way it works is it I unplug and replug it back in to get it to working.  Ive tried all the suggested fixes but no luck.  HP can you please help as I am ready to return this.

Hi @mlav_ca,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how frustrating this is when you expect your Smart Tank 5100 to power on with a simple press of the button, and instead, you’re stuck unplugging and replugging every time. That’s not the experience you signed up for, and I can imagine how inconvenient it feels, especially after trying all the suggested fixes. Let’s work together to get this resolved before you consider returning it.

Why This Happens

This issue often points to:

  • A firmware glitch is causing the printer to hang in standby.
  • A power supply or internal power board fault.
  • Rarely, a control panel failure.

Recommended Steps

Step 1: Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  4. Press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds after plugging in.

Step 2: Check Power Module

  • Ensure the power adapter and cord are genuine HP and firmly connected.
  • If possible, test with another compatible HP adapter.

Step 3: Update Firmware

If the printer powers on after the reset:

  • Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
  • Or use HP Firmware Update Utility.

Step 4: Service Required

If the printer still only works after unplug/replug, it likely needs hardware service.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
