Laserjet 400 MFP
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there,

as the title says:

I made a firmware upgrade (to 202007??) on my LaserJet 400 MFP yesterday.

Before the upgrade the printer had a static IP configured (192.168.0.240) and worked without issues.

After the upgrade the printer was no longer reachable.

The network status says "Initializing.."

After a reset of the network settings, the printer switched to DHCP, got an IP address from the DHCP server and worked correctly.

However I do want to use a static IP.

Got into the network settings, switched again to static and again got the same error "Initializing".

I tried this various times via the touchscreen and also via the webserver interface, always the same.

When the printer gets into this state, it does not help to reconfigure to DHCP. I need to reset the network settings to get it to work again.

And no, the IP address I entered is definitely not in use by another device.

I also tried to disable IPV6 and several ethernet speed settings, all to no avail.

Has one of you smart guys an idea what's happening there?

For me, setting a static IP address is one of the most basic functions of a network printer, I cannot fathom that such an error slipped through the quality control of HP when releasing a new firmware.

Thank you, regards

Louis

Not an answer as to why but a solution. Reserve an address for the printer on the DHCP server. This will provide the printer with the same address all the time and is as effective as setting a static address on the printer.

The one thing that you could try for troubleshooting is to change the network speed from auto to a fixed speed such as 100 or 1000.

Hi and thank you for your suggestion.

Of course I could assign a given address via DHCP, but that would need some larger reconfiguration as the IP address is obviously in a range that's not covered by DHCP.

Additionally since the change to DHCP the printer cannot be reached when it is powered on for longer time, may have to do with the configured DHCP leasing duration of 2 hours.

And, really, if I need a workaround for setting a static IP address, something is wrong @HP.

Funny thing is that everything was fine before the firmware upgrade.

I decided to update after seeing the famous(?) youtube video that showed how easy it is to hack into these printers with potentially very severe consequences. Their suggestion was, for safety reasons,  to update the firmware to the latest available version.

Nonetheless, thank you for your time and efford.
