I had to do a factory reset on my printer, & i misplaced the installation manual. Currently, the device answers voice calls thinking it is an incoming fax. I am trying to set it up so that faxes go out without a problem, but it takes no action when a voice call comes in or a fax comes in.

Thanks for such a quick reply. Here are the steps I followed:
Configuring Your HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw to Send Faxes Only
1. Physical Connection
Connect the phone cord that shipped with the printer from the Fax port on the back of the M283fdw to your telephone jack. Do not attach any other devices (phones, answering machines) to the fax port to prevent unintended fax reception.
2. Access the Fax Setup Menu
On the printer control panel, tap the Setup icon. Scroll to and select Fax Setup, then choose Basic Setup to view core fax settings.
3. Disable Automatic Reception
In Basic Setup, select Answer Mode and set it to Manual. With Manual answer mode, the printer will no longer pick up or receive incoming fax calls automatically—it only transmits when you initiate a fax.
Optional: Increase the Rings to Answer value (e.g., 99) so the printer effectively never answers incoming calls.
4. (Optional) Enable Dial-Tone Detection
Navigate to Fax Setup > Advanced Setup and turn Detect Dial Tone to On. This ensures that every outbound fax is sent only when a valid dial tone is detected, preventing busy-line or no-dial-tone errors.
5. Sending a Fax Manually
Load your document into the automatic document feeder.
Tap Fax on the Home screen.
Enter the recipient’s fax number using the numeric keypad.
Press Start Fax to transmit.
Your M283fdw is now configured strictly for fax transmission. I noticed that the device still indicates an incoming call, but takes no action.
I included the above directions for the benefit of others.

You are welcome.
Excellent - I'm glad you have it set up the way it works best for your situation.
Details are always appreciated by those of us who still live in a fax hardware world.
Smiling.

@francis_M
Have one and I believe it's setup same as yours, not sure about the Dial Tone Transmission.
I too only want it for outgoing. Have you figured out how to SILENCE to ring tone for incoming calls? I do not want it to RING at all, ever.
The device console as a number of times, but I think the smallest is 20 seconds. Not seeing any config in the WEBGUI.
It's actually annoying that I can not do all the setup in the WEBGUI.
Your instructions imply that you are sending on the physical device. You can install the HP Universal FAX SW and FAX from the Computer. Generally works good. You can still do it from the device.
I also used the Basic Scan solution and the Universal Print Drives (PCL6) (PS) set up with Printer Management (printmanagement.msc) and using the HOST Name so it NEVER gets lost. No unwated junk
