Microsoft Windows 11

I have a new Omnibook with Windows 11 Home. I cannot install any printer as there is no PnP (PlugPlay). I have tried numerous methods to allow access but without this feature absolutely nothing works. How do I get the PnP installed so I can actually install my printer and other devices that use the PlugPlay feature.

Hi @Kilowatt2,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're having trouble with Plug and Play (PnP) functionality on your new HP OmniBook laptop. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Windows Services

Make sure that the Plug and Play service is running:

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  2. In the Services window, scroll down and find "Plug and Play."
  3. Right-click on it and select "Properties."
  4. Ensure the "Startup type" is set to "Automatic" and click "Start" if the service is not running. Click "Apply" and then "OK."

2. Update Device Drivers

Sometimes, outdated or missing drivers can cause issues with PnP:

  1. Right-click the Start button and select "Device Manager."
  2. Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and right-click on each entry to choose "Update driver."
  3. Select "Search automatically for updated driver software."

3. Check for Windows Updates

Make sure your system is fully updated:

  1. Go to Settings (Win + I), then "Update & Security," and select "Windows Update."
  2. Click "Check for updates" and install any available updates.

4. Run Hardware Troubleshooter

Windows includes a built-in troubleshooter that might help:

  1. Go to Settings (Win + I), then "Update & Security," and select "Troubleshoot."
  2. Click "Additional troubleshooters" and find "Hardware and Devices."
  3. Run the troubleshooter and follow the prompts.

5. Reinstall USB Controllers

Reinstalling the USB controllers can sometimes fix PnP issues:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers."
  3. Right-click each USB controller and select "Uninstall device."
  4. Restart your computer. Windows should automatically reinstall the USB controllers.

6. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings

Ensure that the USB ports are enabled in the BIOS/UEFI settings:

  1. Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup (usually by pressing Esc, F2, F10, or Del during startup).
  2. Look for settings related to USB and ensure they are enabled.

7. Perform a System File Check

Corrupted system files might be the cause:

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator (Win + X and select "Command Prompt (Admin)" or "Windows Terminal (Admin)").
  2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Allow the scan to complete and follow any instructions provided.

8. Check for Conflicting Software

Sometimes third-party software or security programs can interfere with PnP. Try temporarily disabling any non-essential software to see if it resolves the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Gaya1239

I have done all of this and still nothing. The issue is (to me simple) the PlugPlay in the services.msc DOES NOT EXIST. Please see the screen shot  below. Somehow I have to "create" the PnP in here and it may work. All updates are done (numerous checks) and all drivers, porters etc are "up to date or working properly"

When I try to install my printer easy start or HPSmart I get to the end and it states it cannot find PlugPlay - If I try to install anything else or another printer - same message - That is my problem.  early in my plight I did a full restore and re-installed Windows etc - this was one option - it did not fix the issue. It appears Microsoft has removed this from Windows 11 or at least it is not on the Home edition - I search the internet and dozens of people have the same issue.  Can I set this up some how and add it to the services?  My previous HP Z book has it & it references as follows:

C:\WINDOWS \system32\svchost.exe -k DcomLaunch -p   if I can some how get that set up in the services then I may stand a chance of solving tis issue.  Can you advise on this?

Thanks for the response - as suggested in the private email, there is no solution that can be provided in this forum and I have to **bleep** to get help.

I think people & the HP community should know there is no easy fix for this.

What amazes me is that Microsoft can simply change something and stop things for working as they have done. It is so annoying that when you have something that is working perfectly well they have to "improve" it but in doing so cause more harm than good. I just wish they would leave somethings alone and not fix what is not broken. - Or is that the end goal? - make an operating system that no one can use but is super secure.

I will contact HP and see what they can do to resolve this one but I suspect it will be a long road ahead.
