I am struggling with issues related to tray selection on our P4515x. In the past we had an issue with the jobs going to Tray 1 when it was empty or closed. One needed to press the "OK" button and then it would go to tray 4 ( see in another post where selection defaults to the highest number tray and assumes it to be of the highest capacity, that's fine). I think I did something on the printers menu to "freshen things up" but not clear what that was at this point.
Monday we had a "Maintenance Kit" installed. The tech did some type of reset for the kits life counter and now the issue has returned.
Win 7 clients are on UPD 6.4.1.22169 and I am currently building a Win 10 client with UPD 6.8.0.24296. Some clients have the print issue with tray 1, some do not. I am unable to find a common thread. On the Win 10 PC, I had an issue with the PC telling me there was no paper in the printer. At the time I thought it was a driver install issue, but now thinking this was a tray 1 issue (just looks different on win 10) as it's test pages came out after an "OK" button.
Setting tray 2 as default is not a good solution as tray 1will not feed if loaded.
Config on both the PC and on the printers control panel should be set at default.
As the title says there are two options on the PC's Printer => Printing Preferences => Paper Source selection menu:
"Automatically select" and "Printer auto select".
What is the difference?
On the printers web console, there is Settings=>Configure Device=> Paper handling set as follows.
Tray 1: Size: any size, type: Plain
All other trays: Size Letter, type: Plain
In Windows, the Paper Type is set as Unspecified (default) for all paper options.
I also have seen this post on config for the web console.
Any help in understanding this issue and appropriate config is appreciated.

the difference should be this, when set to auto-select, the driver will try to determine, based on configuration data stored in the driver, which tray to print from. If it sends the job to the printer and that paper does not match it will stop and wait for media to be loaded and ok pressed. This can also be affect if you happen to set the printer paper settings to use requested tray exclusively. If you set the system to printer auto-select, the computer simply sends the job to the printer with the instruction, print from whatever tray has the required media loaded and the printer will select the highest numbered tray that has suitable media. You also need to watch the default settings on the driver because that can affect how printing happens.
