The passcode that you enter into the printer has to be the passcode to your wi-fi network.  That's what makes the printer accessible.

Okay, I got the printer connected and it successfully printed the test page.

However, when I instruct it to print a document, it tells me "printer is not connected".

What next?

Did you add it in settings/printers and scanners?   Hit the plus sign, find the printer and configure.

The printer will tell me "printer not connected", then a few minutes later the document will miraciously print.

This never happened before I got the new Mac with Mojave.

Is there something else that I can do to prevent this?

The printer is there, twice - once as the printer says in USE:  HP Envy 4500 e-all-in-one, and it is listed again as USE: AirPrint.
