I can't seem to register my HP Officejet Pro 8125 All-in-one Printer. When I go to the registration site it keeps telling me that I don't have a valid serial number. The serial number that I added matches both the box and the printer. I do not want the site to locate my printer as I don't want to agree to all the terms allowing HP to use my data. Should I just not register it ? (i want less exposure, or as much as I can control.)

Hi @chuck1103

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand that the serial number on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8125 All-in-One Printer matches the printer and packaging, but the HP registration page is not accepting it. I also understand that you prefer to keep automatic printer detection and optional data sharing to a minimum.

Here are a few steps we suggest:

Confirm the serial number directly from the printer label.
Please use the serial number marked Serial No., S/N, or SN on the printer itself rather than relying only on the box. HP confirms that every printer has a unique serial number and that the printer label may be inside the cartridge-access area or on the back of the printer.

Check the Product Number as well.
The HP OfficeJet Pro 8125 belongs to a printer series, while the Product Number/P/N identifies the exact model or regional configuration. Please note both the Product Number and Serial Number from the printer label.

Try identifying the printer manually on HP Support.
Visit HP Customer Support, choose the option to identify the product, and manually enter the serial number, product number, or product name. HP provides manual identification separately from the “Let HP detect your product” option, so automatic detection is not required for this step.

Try the HP Printer Setup/registration path.
HP's Printer Support page provides Printer Setup guidance specifically for setting up, configuring, and registering an HP printer.

If the serial number is accepted by HP Support but not by the registration page, re-enter it manually on the registration page rather than pasting it, checking carefully for similar characters and any accidental spaces before or after the number.

Regarding whether you should simply leave the printer unregistered, we would not want to tell you that registration is mandatory when the HP material retrieved here does not state that. HP's registration documentation describes registration as an opportunity for customers to register products and customize their HP profile.

Most importantly, there is no need to select automatic printer detection just to test whether HP recognizes your printer. Manual product identification is available, which better matches your preference to keep control over how your printer is identified.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
