HP LaserJet 6MP
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The following 2019 posting basically describes what I am trying to do:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/Problem-getting-HP-LaserJet-6P-working-...

My HP Laserjet 6MP is connected via Ethernet to - and shared to the network by - a Gateway M255E.  I am needing to print via this share point with my HP 17-inch laptop running Win 10 64-bit.  The syntax for "add a printer by name" is \\GATEWAY-M255E\HPLaserJ - and this is duly showing up when Browse is selected in this dialogue.

However, the connection process is looking for the driver file pscript5.dll on the HP laptop, and it's not there.  I have tried the generic PostScript driver installation files downloaded from the HP support site, but the installer will not run under Win 10 (or even Win 7).

Is there a way to manually install this file on my Windows 10 laptop - and perhaps get this fine printer working under that OS?  Thank you!  MarkT

Does the printer have an IP address in the same segment as your computer? If so, is there a reason you are not using IP direct printing instead of a print server. You are probably dealing with a mismatch between the driver installed on the Gateway and your other computer.

Thank you, Repairatrooper.  By itself, this printer does not have the capability of incorporating an IP address.  Would that it could!

There are more complicated and expensive methods to make it print under Win 10 (et al.), but until I have time to explore those further, I'll just continue to use PDF and similar work-arounds.  Stay tuned....  MarkT

Hello again, Repairatrooper.  It occurs to me that I have two Win 7 (64-bit) machines that would be of greater benefit if they were able to print directly to the HP LaserJet 6MP.  Considering that one poster reported successfully using this printer with a Win 8.x system, doesn't it make sense that HP generic PostScript drivers for Win 7 would also work with this printer?  If so, which one(s) should I download and install.

Thank you and best regards, MarkT

While your printer is not listed as supported I would try HP universal printer driver PS edition. Typically HP only tests or certifies current printers but that simply means they do not support, does not mean it will not work. Chances in my experience are also much better when dealing with TCP/IP connections vs. USB.

Good news!  I was able to download and install the generic HP PostScript drivers suggested by a support specialist at HP; then connect the shared HP LaserJet 6MP to the Win 7 Professional Gateway E4150 desktop/tower; and, finally, print a test page from that computer.  Hooray!

The driver found and used for my installation was for the "HP LaserJet 6P/6MP PostScript" - apparently meaning that this older printer *was* still supported under Win 7.

However, when I went through the same procedure with the other computer running the same version of Win 7 Professional, the result was "No driver found."  (I tried locating it manually, to no avail.)

I will go through the same process again tomorrow, and report back on what happens, but if you have any suggestions in the meantime, please let me know.  Thank you!  MarkT
