officejet 6500A plus
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

I have a Mac OS 12.1 (Monterey).

I cannot use my office jet 6500A plus printer

When I try to add the printer (from add a printer option) it sees the printer but when I hit the add button I get an error message saying "Unable to communicate with the printer at this time.  Unable to connect to officejet 6500 e710-z (232e33).ipp_tcp.local.'due to an error.  Would you still like to create the printer?

If I hit continue, I get "An error occurred while trying to add the selected device" Unable to communicate with the printer at this time.

BTW, I also cannot print from my Apple 11 pro phone.  Keeps saying the printer is offline. But not sure why!

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi,

From your description it seems as Bonjour connectivity is not supported somewhere in the connection problem.

Please try restarting your router and allow it 2-3 minutes till the internet connection returns, then restart the printer and try adding it again.

If the same persists with no change, is the printer connected to the wireless network or with an Ethernet cable?

Hi Shlomi -

I tried restarting the router and then the printer, no luck.  Still getting:

"Unable to communicate with this printer""Unable to connect to ‘Officejet 6500 E710n-z [232E33]._ipp._tcp.local.’ due to an error. Would you still like to create the printer?"

Weirdly, it will allow me to add the office jet 6500 E710n-z (Fax) but not the printer.

My wifi is working fine and the printer (and my iPhone) are on the same network.  I am wireless, I do not have an Ethernet port on my Mac Air.  It has worked fine in the past.  I'm at a loss, any other suggestions?

Thank you,

Julie

Thanks for clarifying Julie!

To ensure I'm clear with your description, both the iPhone and the Mac experience the same, is this right?

please follow 'Connect the printer to the Wi-Fi network (printers with a touchscreen); to restore the wireless settings and reconnect the printer by following the Wireless Setup Wizard:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1736500-1626554-16

Now try printing and check for any difference, this will deny any possible printer setting problem..

If the same persists let's try printing a Wireless Test Report from the printer, does it congrats for a successful connection or may include any error or attention on its header?

https://support.hp.com/my-en/document/c06413926

Please let me know how it goes and clarify the test results.

Hi Shlomil -

I ended up using the network _2GEXT.  And that seems to do the trick.  I just have to move my laptop to that area of the house where I get that network.  It aint perfect, but bottomline, I can print!

Thank you!!

Julie
