HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am unable to install the printer software on this replacement pc I started using yesterday.  This printer has worked fine for 10 years and I'd like to continue to use it.  The setup goes for a long time and then says something about it timing out.  I have tried both the complete and basic software packages to no avail.

Hi @BCAUTOUSA,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to have trouble installing your HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf printer software on your new Windows 10 PC. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue.

  • Uninstall Previous Attempts: Make sure to uninstall any partially installed printer software from your PC before proceeding with a fresh installation.
  • Download Latest Drivers: Visit the official HP support website and download the latest drivers and software package specifically designed for Windows 10 for your HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf printer.
  • Compatibility Mode: Right-click on the downloaded installer file, go to Properties, and then to the Compatibility tab. Check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select an earlier version of Windows that the software was known to work with, such as Windows 7 or Windows 8. Apply the changes and try running the installer again.
  • Disable Antivirus/Firewall: Temporarily disable your antivirus software and any firewall settings that may be blocking the installation process. Sometimes, security software can interfere with installation routines.
  • Use HP Smart App: Alternatively, you can try installing your printer using the HP Smart app, which simplifies the setup process and may provide additional troubleshooting options.
  • Manual Installation: If the automated installer continues to fail, you can try manually adding the printer through Windows settings. Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, click on "Add a printer or scanner," and follow the on-screen instructions. You may need to select "The printer I want isn't listed" and choose to add a printer using TCP/IP address or hostname.
  • Check USB Connection: Ensure that your printer is connected properly via USB cable and powered on during the installation process.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
