I have looked and tried everything to connect my Laserjet 1022n printer via usb cable to my laptop. It used to work. Now it does not. And very randomly it will print out towards the bottom a small sideways smiley emoji. I have tried everything EVERYTHING. and nothing works. Google is worthless.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @WV_Magyar,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your USB Laserjet 1022n printer on Windows 11. Let's try some troubleshooting steps to see if we can resolve the problem.
Check USB Connection:
- Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and your laptop.
- Try using a different USB port on your laptop.
Printer Drivers:
- Make sure that the correct printer drivers are installed on your laptop.
- You can download the latest drivers from the official HP website for your Laserjet 1022n model.
Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager on your laptop.
- Locate the printer under "Print queues" or "Other devices."
- If there's an issue, such as a yellow triangle, right-click and choose to update the driver.
Restart Devices:
- Turn off both the printer and your laptop.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Reconnect the USB cable and turn on the devices.
Printer Spooler Service:
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Locate the "Print Spooler" service, right-click, and restart it.
Reinstall Printer:
- Uninstall the printer from your laptop.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Reinstall the printer using the latest drivers.
Windows Update:
- Ensure that your Windows 11 is up to date. Check for and install any pending updates.
Antivirus/Firewall:
- Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall to see if they are blocking the printer connection.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

First I want to thank you for your assistance. I have tried everyone of the steps as you have outlined. I have also contacted MS Support and spent two hours with them remoted into the laptop. All they did did not work either.

Was unable to connect. This has got me insane at this point. My fiance is a little afraid to walk into the office. Direct connect, Windows 11 pro dings, recognizing a connection to the USB. That's it.
I did a cold reset. I printed the self test/configuration and have an ip of 0.0.0.0. I have done the cold reset 5 times and still, no joy.
I connected to an older Lenovo laptop running Win 10 Pro. Direct connect with it and it prints like a champ. Win 11 ust will not see it. And the attempt to connect via a semi managed switch doesn't work since the ip repeats the 0.0.0.0

Hi @WV_Magyar,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I see that you are facing an issue with your printer that prints an extra blank page.
A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.
1) Take out the cartridges
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges
B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and check if the issue is resolved.
C) If the issue still persists, uninstall the printer software by following the steps from this link and restart the devices.
D) Install the printer software by clicking on the link again and let me know if that resolves the issue.
Note: Enable Bluetooth for an HP Smart app setup: Enable Bluetooth on your computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.
Refer to this link for more information related to the issue.
Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution. Click the “Kudos/Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!

UPDATE
I have exhausted everything I could think of. I finally did a cold reset and still had the networking issue. I am able to print from a Win 10 laptop. Issue with the Win 10 AND Win 11 laptop is NONE of HP's software finds the printer; on either laptop.
I did everything I could do and suggestions 10 different times. I finally downloaded the software "hp_LJ1020_Full_Solution-v2012_918_1_57980". I ran it. Still, direct connect still didn't work on either laptop. I decided to run at the administrator Command Prompt: SFC /SCANNOW
Once I ran it, I was surprised to see there were issue. The scan fixed the issue so I rebooted the laptop and did another cold reset on the printer. Once everything was back up, I did the print test page from the printer. Low and behold there was and IP address!!!! and set to DHCP.
With an IP address, I was able to manually add the printer via network. Test print worked. I opened a Word doc and printed it. It worked like a charm. I did the same on the other laptop with the IP address and sure enough, it worked.
However, HP software DOES NOT SEE THE PRINTER. NONE of them. So, this is still and issue. These are the issues pending with this printer with BOTH Win 10 and Win 11
Direct connect with a USB cable works with Win 10, but HP software does not see it. (I tried different cables to confirm it was not a USB cable issue. It prints connected directly to the printer. It also prints via network connection.
Win 11 direct connect does not work. HP software does not see it. Prints via network.
Again, NO HP software sees the printer whether direct connect or network.
Edit: This is the error message that pops up when I try to run the firmware update:
---------------------------
Error
---------------------------
Cannot find a HP LaserJet 1020 series drivers printer installed on this system.

HP no longer supports 1022 driver, so I had to use Microsoft driver " HP 1022 Class" driver. However this driver doesnot work and HP 1022 doesn't print.
I had no issues with my HP 1022 printer using Windows 10. Once I installed Windows 11, my HP 1022 quit working period.
This problem lies with Windows 11 and HPs inability to address this issue. Its unfortunate as my HP 1022 has been a very reliable printer uptill installing windows 11.

I hear you, I spent 2 hours with them too and they tried to hijack me for $199.. They only wasted my time. I have a Laser jet mfp29w. I had to buy a new computer because my other one was wrecked by a fixmestick.(another story of scams)
