HP LaserJet MFP M234sdwe Printer

I just purchased an HP Laser Jet M234 SDWE. It connects to the wifi just fine. I need to be able to connect to my computer via USB for security purposes, but my computer won't recognize the printer without the wifi. Can anyone help me with the set-up?

Hi @Lizabeth337,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Certainly! Setting up your HP LaserJet M234 SDWE to connect to your computer via USB can be done by following these steps.

Connect the Printer to your Computer:

  • Use a USB cable to connect the printer to your computer. The USB port on the printer is usually located on the back.

Install Printer Drivers:

  • Before connecting the USB cable, make sure you have the latest HP LaserJet M234 SDWE drivers installed on your computer. You can usually find these on the HP website. Download and install the appropriate drivers for your operating system.

Power on the Printer:

  • Turn on your HP LaserJet M234 SDWE.

Connect the USB Cable:

  • Connect one end of the USB cable to the USB port on the back of the printer and the other end to an available USB port on your computer.

Wait for Windows to Detect the Printer:

  • Once the USB cable is connected, your computer should automatically detect the new hardware. Windows will try to install the necessary drivers. If prompted, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Check Printer Status:

  • Open the "Devices and Printers" or "Printers & Scanners" section on your computer to verify that the HP LaserJet M234 SDWE is listed as an installed printer. Ensure that it's set as the default printer if needed.

Print a Test Page:

  • To confirm that the printer is working correctly, try printing a test page. Right-click on the printer icon, select "Printer properties," and look for an option to print a test page.

Disable Wireless Connection (Optional):

  • If you want to ensure that the printer is only accessible via USB for security purposes, you can disable the wireless connection on the printer. Refer to the printer's manual for instructions on how to disable Wi-Fi.

Remember that by connecting your printer via USB, you are essentially using a direct connection, and the printer should be recognized by your computer without relying on the Wi-Fi connection. If you encounter any issues, double-check the USB cable, make sure the drivers are installed correctly, and consult the printer's manual for specific instructions related to USB connectivity and security settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
