I recently bought a used HP Laserjet M110we and am trying to set it up, but i keep getting an error on the HP Smart app saying “Unable to check firmware”. The printer is connected to the wifi and printed the wireless test network test report saying there are no issues. The printer will pop up in the app, but I can’t finish setup without getting the error. I ended up on a window somehow that showed there were no updates needed either.

@lmnicholes, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

The “Unable to check firmware” error in the HP Smart app can occur due to a few reasons, even if your printer is connected to Wi-Fi and shows no network issues. Here are some steps to help resolve this and complete your setup:

Ensure HP+ Setup Is Completed

The HP LaserJet M110we is an HP+ printer, which requires:

  • An HP account
  • Internet connection
  • HP Smart app for setup

Make sure you're signed into the HP Smart app with your HP account. If not, create or sign in here.

Use HP Smart’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

HP Smart includes a built-in tool to automatically detect and fix common issues:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your Windows or Mac device.
  • Click on your printer > Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Follow the prompts to run the tool.

Access Embedded Web Server (EWS)

You can manually check and update firmware via the printer’s EWS:

  • Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer.
  • Note the IP address.
  • Enter the IP address in a browser to open the EWS.
  • Navigate to General > Firmware Update or Tools > Printer Updates.
  • Enter the printer’s PIN (found inside the cartridge area) if prompted.
  • Click Check for Update and install if available.

Reset Wi-Fi Setup Mode

If the printer was previously set up, it may have exited Wi-Fi setup mode:

  • Press and hold the Wireless button until the light blinks.
  • This resets Wi-Fi setup mode and allows HP Smart to detect the printer properly.

Try a Different Device or Network

Sometimes, switching to another device (e.g., a different phone or PC) or network (e.g., mobile hotspot) can bypass setup issues.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
