i’m using an HP Smart Tank 529 printer, which doesn’t have Wi-Fi connectivity. I’m trying to connect it to my MacBook Air M1via a wired USB connection, but my MacBook is not detecting the printer.

Could you please help me with the correct drivers or steps to get this printer working on my Mac?

Hi @Ruth2026,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Smart Tank 529 not being detected by your MacBook Air M1 over USB. Let’s go through a few checks.

Before we proceed:
Which macOS version are you currently using?

Meanwhile, you can follow these steps:

Step 1: Verify USB Connection

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the USB cable from both ends.
  • Reconnect the cable directly to the Mac using a USB-C adapter if required.
  • Avoid USB hubs or docking stations.
  • Turn the printer back on and wait 30 seconds.
  • If possible, test with a different USB cable.

Step 2: Add Printer Manually in macOS

  • Open System Settings.
  • Select Printers & Scanners.
  • Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
  • Wait for the printer to appear in the list.
  • In the “Use” field, select AirPrint if available.
  • Click Add.
  • If the printer does not appear, unplug and reconnect the USB cable and try again.

Step 3: Reset macOS Printing System

  • Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click in the printer list area.
  • Select Reset printing system.
  • Confirm the reset.
  • Restart the Mac.
  • Add the printer again.

Note: This removes all existing printers from the Mac.

Step 4: Install Latest HP macOS Driver

  • Visit the HP support website.
  • Enter “HP Smart Tank 529.”
  • Select your exact macOS version.
  • Download the full feature software or Easy Start package.
  • Install and restart the Mac.
  • Add the printer again from Printers & Scanners.

Step 5: Check Scanner Detection

  • Open Applications.
  • Launch Image Capture.
  • Check if the printer appears in the device list.
  • If listed, attempt a test scan.

If printing works but scanning does not, the macOS version may limit scanning support.

I hope this helps.
