Unable to detect HP ENVY Pro 6420 when trying to set it up. I've tried on my iPhone and MacBook Air

I've just inherited an HP ENVY Pro 6420 printer from a friend who told me it was a great device. I had no instructions for set up, but followed online instructions to download the HP Smart App and follow instructions. I initially tried via my phone, then (when the printer could not be detected), via my MacBook Air. Neither device could detect the printer. I tried moving the printer next to the router. I tried restarting all devices and my wifi. I tried joining the HP-Setup wifi as the app suggested, but the only wifi that appeared was called "DIRECT-4E-HP ENVY Pro 6400" which required a WPA2 password. I found a video that told me to press the flashing i (information) button to get a copy of the password, but it printed a blank page except for 3 icons (one the wifi icon) and the text hp.com/support/envy6400. Apparently a full page of text should have appeared with a numerical password for the wifi. I tried 2-3 times... the same limited information was printed. I've run out of inspiration. All videos suggest it's an easy set up, which it seems to be ... IF the device is found. If not... I'm stuck. I found an ethernet cable to try to get the router to talk to the device in a hard-wired way, but there is no ethernet port on the printer. I'd appreciate any suggestions/help. I'm sure the device works well if I can just get beyond this frustrating set-up challenge.
