Hi @ddvg,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 not printing after a Windows update is likely due to changes or disruptions in the printer driver or spooler service. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and resolve it.

Check Printer Connection

  1. Restart Printer and Computer:
    • Turn off your printer and computer. Wait for 1-2 minutes and then turn them back on.
  2. Verify Connection:
    • If using Wi-Fi, ensure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
    • If using a USB cable, reconnect the cable securely to both the printer and the computer.
  3. Check Printer Status:
    • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
    • Ensure your printer shows as Online and is set as the default printer.

Update Printer Drivers

  1. Uninstall the Old Driver:
    • Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Find any HP OfficeJet Pro drivers, select them, and click Uninstall.
  2. Download and Install the Latest Driver:
    • Visit the HP Support website and search for the OfficeJet Pro 6978.
    • Download the latest drivers for Windows and install them.

Reset the Print Spooler

  1. Open the Command Prompt (run as administrator):
    • Press Win + S, type cmd, right-click, and select Run as Administrator.
  2. Enter the following commands:

net stop spooler
del %systemroot%\System32\spool\printers\* /Q
net start spooler

  1. Restart your computer and try printing again.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to identify and fix any printer-related issues.

Check for Windows Update Issues

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Look for Optional Updates to check for updates related to your printer.
  3. If no updates are available, try rolling back the recent update:
    • Open Settings > Update & Security > View Update History > Uninstall Updates.
    • Select the problematic update and click Uninstall.

Test with Another Application

Try printing from different applications (e.g., Notepad, Word) to rule out application-specific issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
