I have an HP Smart Tank Plus 651 All-in-One printer and I'm running the Windows 10 21H2 64-bit. I too use the HP Smart app or the HP Scan Extended app and I lost my ability to use the scanner after the July Patch Tuesday. I posted some info regarding this in July. My printer would work but my scanner would not. I had to uninstall KB5015807 in order to get the scanner to work. The August Patch Tuesday just came out on Tuesday and I have the exact same problem. I had to uninstall KB5016616 in order to get the scanner to work again. I don't like this situation because it puts me behind on the past 2 monthly patches.
I was reading on the internet that the problem might be because the printer is USB connected (and mine is). My question here is.........when I set my printer up 2 years ago, I bypassed the Wi-Fi connection setup because I was going to connect with USB. How do I now set up the Wi-Fi connection ability for the printer? I know I can just connect the USB cable, but how do I set up with Wi-Fi?
Thanks for any information that someone might have regarding this.

PS - My printer firmware and drivers are up to date.

Thank you so much for your valuable and helpful info. I have not had a chance to go through all the steps to see if this fixes my scanning problem as I am out of town for a few days.
Have you heard anything about the July & August Patch Tuesdays being the cause of my losing the ability to scan from my printer but I can still print? The Windows community said the problem is that my HP can no longer be connected with by USB.
Is this something that HP is looking at? Might HP issue an update or firmware update to take care of this gliche?
Thanks again,

Hi,
Not heard of July & August Patch. However, any patch should not affect the connectivity of the printer- so USB is still supported.
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for your response. KB5015807 which was part of the July Patch Tuesday update and KB5016616 which was part of the August Patch Tuesday update, both will put my scanner out of commission........ I had to uninstall the KB5015807 after it was installed on July 12th in order to get the scanner to work again which it did until KB5016616 was installed on August 9th. I then had to uninstall KB5016616 to get the scanner to work. The scanner is still working because I have paused all updates until September 13th. The printer still worked in both instances. It only involved my scanner.
I do not want to get behind on my updates because Microsoft will be releasing the annual update in a month or two. I am currently on Windows 10 v21H2.

I am the one who originally started this thread and I am still having the same problem. The July Patch Tuesday #KB 5010807 caused my scanner to no longer function and then the August Patch Tuesday #KB506616 caused the exact same problem.
Well, today I received the September Patch Tuesday #KB5016688 and it has caused the exact problem again.
My workaround for the last 2 months was to uninstall the KB that was causing the problem and the scanner would work. I then set my computer to not automatically update until the date of the next Patch Tuesday. I uninstalled the September KB5016688 and my scanner works again, but I can no longer pause the updates. It says "The pause limit has been reached. You'll need to install the latest updates on this device before you can pause again. Your device is missing important security and quality fixes."
The drivers & firmware are up-to-date but I can't find any other help for this problem. Has anyone found a solution?
Thank you all so much for all the advice I've been given so far,

Hi @cb071844
Try using the HP FULL software, download and install from this link:
The FULL software supports print and scan.
Hope that helps.

Hi @cb071844
Offline use only means that you can download the software package onto a USB thumbdrive and run the software from there.
However, if you are using a wireless connectivity, a network is still needed.
Thanks

Greenturtle,
Thank you so much for trying to help me solve my problem. I had HP printer support working on this problem for 3 days and they could not solve the problem for me. It sounds like there must be something with the way the Patch Tuesday updates are trying to install on my OS. I'm going to need further support with that.
Thanks again,
