I am unable to set up my printer. It says "unable to register printer to your account" I have tried all the steps suggested but I still could not resolve the issue, I would appreciate any help. By the way, the printer was a gift from a friend

Hi @Leo2F,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is, especially when your new-to-you, gifted printer won’t register, and there’s no clear explanation from the setup wizard. Let’s troubleshoot this together.

Step 1: Ensure Printer Is Ready for Setup

  • Unbox or power cycle the printer and remove all packing materials, tape, or shipping braces from inside the paper trays and carriage area.
  • Press Power to wake the printer, ensuring it’s entirely started up and waiting for network setup.

Step 2: Connect to Wi‑Fi

  • On the printer control panel, find the Wireless Setup Wizard (often under Network or Settings).
  • Select your current Wi‑Fi network, and enter the correct password.
  • Wait for the Wi‑Fi icon to glow solid; this confirms a connection.

Step 3: Use HP App or HP Easy Start

Step 4: Reset to Factory Defaults

If the error persists:

  • Open your printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer’s IP address into a web browser.
  • Sign in with admin (or the printer's PIN if needed).
  • Navigate to Settings → Restore Defaults → Factory Defaults.
  • Agree to reset, giving the printer a clean slate.

After the reset:

  • Reconnect Wi‑Fi.
  • Restart HP Smart/Easy Start.
  • Attempt the Add Printer step again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
