I've exactly the same problem as stated in HP 8600 Pro Firmware update not applicable - HP Support Community - 8423878

I've correctly downloaded latest firmware (required to update certificates on integrated server).

After running the updating tool, it successfully detects my printer but the state is "not applicable".

In previously mentioned post it looks as if there's another way for troubleshooting it, and that it was answered by private message.

Could you please assist me on this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Dear Elohi,

Thanks a lot for your detailed answer.

Sadly, I think that I didn't explained correctly and I fear that it doesn't apply to my current problem.

I was not trying to use the automatic firmware update feature (and as far as I remember, it was not activated on the printer either).

The "not applicable" message shows when I try to update the firmware manually, from a computer, using an USB cable to directly connect to the printer, and using the downloaded file from HP support's pages that shows as last available firmware patch for the specific model of printer, I mean: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/ojp8600n911_2011A/OJP8600_N911g-n_2011A.exe , available from: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

When I run that downloaded tool, it clearly detects the printer, but it happens exactly the same issue as described in the mentioned case (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/HP-8600-Pro-Firmware-update-not-applica...

In such case, the HP support engineer looks like it managed the issue through Private message, so I cannot access the solution.

Can you review that case and tell what are the steps in order to apply the firmware update?

Thanks in advance.

Ahm... Elohi... have you sent me (twice in a row) the same answer that I previously told you it does not apply, or was it an error?
Sorry but I don't understand it. 😶

Hi @JIT_BCM,

Apologies. Seems there was a technical glitch.

If you have already performed those steps and still having issues, then this might require one-on-one interaction to fix the issue via remote assistance.

I read your private message and let me tell you that a solution along the lines of "contact local support services and check warranty" is not the kind of response I was expecting on a support forum like this, especially since there have already been previous identical queries to mine. (Perhaps they have also been cleared with that type of response, of course).

Is that all you can really assist me?

IMHO, this is a clear case of planned obsolescence: the printer has an EWS (Embedded Web Server), which requires using a digital certificate and a security protocol that, once they expire or are marked as insecure, there is no way to update them, which makes practically the entire printer configuration unusable, even though printer continues to print in perfect condition, and users buy original HP cartridges. If we need to touch anything on config... be prepared to trash the printer and buy a new one.
