For months I have been unable to properly update my Lenovo laptop .

I repeatedly receive this error message every time I attempt to perform a manual Windows Update.

Hewlett-Packard - USB - 2/18/2019 12:00:00 AM - 40.13.1167.1948

Hi @Route66RT

I can help with HP products, but since this is on a Lenovo laptop, here’s what’s happening:

The update “Hewlett-Packard – USB – 40.13.1167.1948 (2/18/2019)” is an optional HP USB driver that Windows Update keeps trying to install. Many users report it failing repeatedly with error 0x800F020B. The driver isn’t required if your devices are already working, so it’s safe to block it.

What you can try:

  1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter (Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot).

  2. Clear the update cache:

    • Open Command Prompt as admin → net stop wuauserv

    • Delete files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

    • Run → net start wuauserv

  3. In Device Manager, check USB drivers and update/reinstall if needed.

  4. Hide the failing update so it stops retrying (using Microsoft’s “Show or Hide Updates” tool).

If the update is hidden, Windows won’t try to install it again. If issues continue, Lenovo Support can provide model-specific guidance.

I am an HP Employee. Although I am

HP.
