Update USB - 58.2.1778.23178 failed after several attempts.

The instructions provided by HP to resolve the problem are to difficult.

Also I can not find the driver manually on the HP support website.

There's room for improvement here.

Dear Hawks-Eye, Thank you for your response and advice. Amazingly, after seeing the error for days, it disappeared following the last manual update. Quite remarkable. In any case, thank you for your effort.

Hi @Yddub

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

You're absolutely right to feel frustrated—when a USB driver update like 58.2.1778.23178 fails repeatedly and isn’t easy to locate manually, it can feel unnecessarily complicated.

Let’s simplify the steps and help you move past this.

What This Update Is

The update labeled Hewlett-Packard – USB – 58.2.1778.23178 is a device-specific USB driver pushed through Windows Update. It typically applies to HP printers or multifunction devices connected via USB. The error code often seen with this update is 0x800f020b, which means the device isn’t currently connected—even if it was previously installed.

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1: Disconnect All USB Devices Except Keyboard/Mouse

  1. Power off your computer.
  2. Disconnect all USB-connected printers, scanners, and accessories.
  3. Restart your computer and let Windows settle for 2 minutes.

This clears any cached device states that may block the update.

Step 2: Remove the Problematic Driver Entry

  1. Press Windows + R, type printui /s /t2, and press Enter.
  2. In the Print Server Properties window, look for any HP USB-related drivers.
  3. Select each one and click Remove.
  4. Choose Remove driver and driver package when prompted.

This clears out any corrupted or incomplete driver packages.

Step 3: Reconnect the USB Device and Reinstall via HP App

Download the HP App from:
https://www.hp.com/in-en/shop/apps/hp-app.html

Open the app and connect your HP device via USB.

The app will detect your printer and install the correct driver automatically—bypassing the failed Windows Update.

Step 4: Hide the Update (Optional)

If the update continues to appear and fail:

Download the “Show or Hide Updates” troubleshooter from Microsoft:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalli...

Run the tool and select the USB update to hide it.

Let me know which HP device you’re using if you’d like help locating its exact driver manually. You’re doing everything right by staying persistent—let’s make sure your system stays clean, stable, and free of update errors.

You are welcome @Yddub

That’s wonderful to hear—thank you for the update.

It’s always a relief when a persistent error finally clears, especially after days of troubleshooting. Sounds like the manual update did just what was needed to reset things.

If anything else crops up, I’m here to help you keep everything running smoothly.

Cheers!
