To all,
Driver issue: In the Settings area for Windows (11) Update is says:-
Updates failed
Hewlett-Packard - USB - 2/10/2017 12:00:00 AM - 44.1.2402.1741 - Retry
Install error - 0x80070103
--------------------
The 'Retry' does not work.
My HP printer works as normal, so not too sure if an update fails to install, why is it still listed !
My thinking is that MS should not hold these in place on ones PC after several attempts to re-install have failed. In any event, is there a settings to remove listed updates that do not install ?
If not, there should be.

Hi @CJT1963,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error code 0x80070103 typically indicates that a driver update has failed because the version of the driver you’re trying to install is the same or older than the one currently installed, or there’s an issue with the update process itself. Here’s how you can resolve this issue and manage updates that have failed:
1. Remove the Failed Update from Windows Update
You can try to remove the problematic update manually. Here’s how to do it:
Open Windows Update Settings:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click on View update history.
- Click on Uninstall updates. This will open the Installed Updates window in Control Panel.
- Locate the update that corresponds to the error (e.g., Hewlett-Packard USB driver).
- Select the update and click Uninstall. Follow the prompts to remove the update.
2. Check for Driver Updates via Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.:
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and locate the Hewlett-Packard USB driver.
- Right-click on the HP USB driver and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If updating doesn’t work, right-click the driver and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart your computer. Windows should attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.
3. Manually Download and Install the Driver
- Go to HP Support.
- Enter your printer model and download the latest driver available for your device.
- Run the downloaded driver file and follow the installation instructions.
4. Clear Windows Update Cache
Clearing the Windows Update cache can resolve issues with failed updates:
- Right-click on the Start button and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Type the following commands and press Enter after each:
- Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ and delete all files and folders in this directory.
- Restart the services with these commands:
- Go back to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates again.
5. Use Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. Follow the prompts to fix any issues found.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
