I've had problems discovering how to update the firmware on HP LaserJet M1217nfw MFP printer (CE844A) due to the firmware software warning that RFU needs to be on but can't find the setting for it anywhere.
I downloaded the new firmware version 20180302 software installer (to replace firmware version 20150405) from here:
https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-laserjet-pro-m1217nfw-multifunction-pr...
New Firmware Version: 20180302
Release date: Dec 13, 2019
Operating Systems: Windows 10 (64-bit)
Filename: LJM1130_M1210_FW_Upgrade_Security-20180302.exe
System requirements:
- HP LaserJet M1130_M1210 series printer driver must be installed.
- Must be able to print to the HP LaserJet M1130_M1210 series.
I connected the printer using a USB cable and ran the firmware installer software. Was given a message to ensure that the RFU (Remote Firmware Update) needs to be on. Problem is can't locate the information anywhere to discover if the RFU is on or it even exists for that printer. Checked on the printer physical control settings, software settings, driver settings, report configuration printout, printer IP address web configuration, using 'HP Print and Scan Doctor' utility software, printer manual...
Two questions:
1. How do I discover if RFU is on, on the HP LaserJet M1217nfw MFP printer (CE844A)?
2. The system requirements to install the firmware are that 'HP LaserJet M1130_M1210 series printer driver must be installed' and 'must be able to print to the HP LaserJet M1130_M1210 series'. Does the LaserJet M1217nfw MFP printer fall within those two requirements and is a M1130_M1210 series printer, therefore the LaserJet M1217nfw MFP printer is fully compatible to installed firmware 20180302?

@mp999, Welcome to HP Support Community!
There are different methods of changing the RFU settings. Follow the steps below-
Embedded Web Server (EWS) Method
To disable the RFU setting from the EWS
-
Open the EWS configuration interface by entering the device IP address in a web browser.
Figure: Entering the device IP address
-
Select the Settings tab.
-
Select the Security menu.
-
Select the Configure Security Settings button.
Figure: Security menu options
-
Uncheck the Remote Firmware Upgrade checkbox.
-
Select Apply.
Figure: Disabling the RFU setting from EWS
Refer to the document HP LaserJet Printers and Multifunction Devices - How to Disable Remote Firmware Upgrades for help.

Unfortunately the EWS configuration interface for the HP LaserJet M1217nfw MFP shows no security tab or settings menu?
I checked all the options on all the tabs.
I looked here as you suggested:
https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03154309
and found this relating to the HP LaserJet M1217nfw MFP:
As you can see from the screenshot of the key to the symbols, there is no definition of what the tick symbol means?
If the symbol represents a button, The printer has a basic 2 line LCD screen but there is no button with a tick symbol.

The only option left is to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.
I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.
Hope this helps!

Thanks.
I am guessing that by doing a full reset will downgrade the firmware to the original factory installed version and reset all the settings to default, is that correct?
I have firmware version 20150405 currently installed. It was a firmware upgrade so in doing the reset, I would be downgrading the firmware?
I guess firmware version 20150405 has no RFU setting.
Which firmware versions have the RFU setting included?

The printer will be reset to the factory defaults upon doing the NVRAM reset. However, the firmware will remain the same. The reset will not downgrade the firmware.
Once the reset is complete, complete the printer setup and continue.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

How would resetting the printer, that does not change the firmware, be able to add the RFU enable/disable feature (a software function contained in the printer's firmware) to the printer's EWS configuration interface (the software in the printer's firmware) given that the firmware has not change during the reset process? That's why I ask which firmware has the RFU feature included?
I recall, while setting up the printer, there was no option as to whether or not to include the RFU feature. It's highly unlikely the RFU feature is suddenly going to disappear from the printer's EWS configuration interface.
