OfficeJet Pro 9015

My old OfficeJet Pro 8500 (A909g) just started leaking ink, so I bought a new OfficeJet Pro 9015 (1KR42A). I'll be using it in a home office with a Win 10 Pro 64-bit PC and an iMac and maybe other devices if they can connect.

From past experience, the new 9015 software will probably NOT have Print Preview.  With my old 8500, when I hit Print, a "Preview" computer window pops up and shows me in advance what will actually print.  If it looks wrong -- for example. showing many pages when I want to print only one -- then I can cancel the print before it starts.  It's really great and saves paper, time and especially ink, which is why HP discontinued Print Preview in later models.

 

So, to retain "Preview", can I continue using the driver software from the 8500 (A909g) with the new 9015 (1KR42A)?  How can I set that up?

PS - HP's own explanation of this (from the old 8500) is: 

Show preview before printing.
Enables the Print Preview utility to display the layout of a document immediately before a print job begins.

Hi,

You may set it as an alternate driver after installing the 9015 original software.

 

After installing the printer, open its Printer Properties and take note of the used port for your printer.

Click on Add Printer, then press the Printer that I want Isn't listed, select a Local Printer or a Manual Printer with manual settings.

Select the same port as used by your printer, be sure to uncheck the bottom box to auto query the driver for a network connection.

Follow the wizard and select HP

Locate and select the HP Officejet Pro 8500 driver of your old printer.

Follow the wizard to complete the steps, then try printing with the newly created print queue.

ShiomiL - I recall your helping me some years ago with an old issue on the now-dead 8500.  Very nice that you're still here with us.

 

Question #1:  Since my Win 10 PC already has the driver installed for the old 8500 (which I disconnected from my home router only yesterday), can I get the Properties for the 9015 to point to that existing installation, which also has my pre-programmed printing preferences, etc?

I ask because your way sort of looks like my PC will newly search for the 8500 drivers.

 

Question #2:  I probably have the old 8500 driver installation exe file somewhere on my PC already - would your method work if I point to it?

From your description, I assume the printer is connected through the network?

 

Have you already connected the new printer to the network?

 

Please swipe down the top bar on the printer screen and note it’s IP Address.

 

On your PC, right click the existing print queue and select Printer Properties.

Within the Ports tab click on New port and select a Standard TCP/IP port.

Follow the Wizard by providing the new printer’s IP Address, then press Apply, OK and try printing.

 

You unlikely need to use the old software, as the printer driver is already installed on your system.

ShlomiL - Questions before I start --

 

FYI - Yes, the new 9015 will be connected to my home network and should get its own 192.168.1.xxx local IP address from my Verizon Quantum G1100 router.  (I suppose I should make that a static IP address.) 

 

1)  I have not yet connected the 9015 to anything.  Does that make a difference?  Should I do something in advance?

 

2)  You wrote, "You unlikely need to use the old software, as the printer driver is already installed on your system."  Just to confirm, when you say "printer driver" here, I think you still mean the 8500 printer driver, yes? 

 

3)  You also wrote, "Please swipe down the top bar on the printer screen and note it’s IP Address."  Interesting.  I never tried that on my old 8500.  Instead, I would press * and # on its keyboard simultaneously and then press either 1, 2, 3 or (I think) 1, 2, 4 to see all the hidden tech settings.  On the new 9015, what do I do to see those same hidden tech settings?  Just swipe down on its screen, or something else?

 

4)  By the way, right now, on my main PC, when I look at Printer Properties for the old 8500 (no longer connected), I see that its port is a Standard TCP/IP Port with a Port Name  "HP_192.168.1.3_[serial number]".  Does this change your advice in any way?

 

5)  Thinking - since the old 8500 had local IP address 192.168.1.3 and that's what the old Printer Properties Port points to, should I first try to make the IP of the new 9015 the same 192.168.1.3  in my router settings and then just see if the old printer queue works?   But the old printer queue has a "Port name" that includes the serial number of the old 8500, and its "Location" is "IP=192.168.1.3,Host=HP9779E3".  I think that Host=HP9779E3 is only good for the 8500 and won't connect to the 9015, correct?  (Unless I changed this "Location" to match the "Host" identifier for the 9015?)

ShlomiL - I am responding to your alternate steps three posts above.

First, I managed to install the new 9015 on my system, although there were many missteps and I had to call HP support four times.  (Scan to Network from the machine would not work until I added a password to my User account on my Win 10 Pro 64-bit PC.)

Well, this method works, and I have Print Preview in the usual 8500 window when I go to print on the 9015 (hallelujah), but the actual print on the 9015 is VERRRYYYYY  SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW.  Too slow to be practical.

 

I tried rebooting the PC and the 9015, but then had to rejigger Devices and Printers again in order to make the new version of the 8500 the Default.  And now when I right-click that in Devices and Printers, it shows me two instances of the same setup.

 

Thoughts?  We're almost there, and Print Preview is so helpful, so I would really like to pursue this.  Thanks.
