No... the Windows built-in drivers did not work as you said 😞
I tried numerous times over a week or so to find drivers, followed the procedure on the HP site to the letter, but could not find any Win10 driver.
Eventually I gave up trying, then a couple of weeks later out of the blue, a standard overnight Windows Update listed the drivers as an optional install. I can only assume someone in Microsoft either provided an update link, or maybe even re-wrote the drivers for Win10.
If anyone in Microsoft is reading this - thanks, you saved me an expensive purchase when I still had a perfectly useable printer. If you would like to continue the re-write to provide the entire original driver functionality that would be fantastic!!

My driver just turned up out of the blue.
I just looked in the Device Manager (to find the driver id) but it doesn't actually list the 1220c. It does list a Root Print Queue but looking in there simply takes me the Devices and Printers section of the Control Panel. There the 1220c is visible, but there's no driver info available.
I checked the (Microsoft) Windows Update site and they do list a 1220c driver for Win7, Win8, Win8.1 and later drivers... You could perhaps try it? https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/search.aspx?q=deskjet%201220c
Sorry I couldn't help more.

Thank you Peter
As you suggested I went into the Microsoft Update Catalog site, downloaded, what happens to be a .cap file. But I don't know what to do with a cap .file?
Another thought. My 1220c works brilliant on my old WIN 2000 NT PC. How about using that WIN 2000 NT PC as a print server by (sharing the printer)? But I'm not sure which Machine the driver should be associated with.

If the file doesn't doesn't install when clicked, you can go to Control Panel -> Device Manager and look for the printer. If it's not there, connect and turn on the printer. (You may get an error message saying the pc has found new hardware but can't install it) Check Device Manager again (if the printer still isn't there, you may need to scan for new hardware. Incidentally, my Device Manager had the 1220c hidden for some inexplicable reason). Device Manager will say there is no driver installed. Click Update Driver and then on the next screen select the "Browse my computer..." option (not the automatic search) and browse to the file you downloaded. If if has a suitable driver it should then install. Good luck!!
