How can I connect my HPLaserJet1160 printer to my Windows 11 laptop?

Also, when I type in the serial number for the printer, HP says it is not a valid serial number.

@PJM55, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I’ll guide you through connecting your HP LaserJet 1160 to your Windows 11 laptop, and also help with the serial number issue you're facing.

Connecting HP LaserJet 1160 to Windows 11

The HP LaserJet 1160 is an older model, and HP does not officially provide Windows 11-specific drivers for it. However, you can still use it by installing a Universal Print Driver (UPD) or manually adding it using built-in Windows drivers.

Option 1: Use HP Universal Print Driver (UPD)

  1. Go to the official HP driver page: Official HP® Support
  2. Select Windows 10 (64-bit) as your OS (Windows 11 is compatible with most Win10 drivers).
  3. Download the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows – PCL6.
  4. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Connect the printer via USB. Windows should detect it and install the driver.

Option 2: Add Printer Manually

  1. Connect the printer via USB.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Click Add a printer or scanner.
  4. If Windows doesn’t find it, click “The printer that I want isn’t listed”.
  5. Choose Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
  6. Select Use an existing port (usually USB001).
  7. Choose HP > HP LaserJet 1160 or HP LaserJet Series II from the driver list.
  8. Complete the setup.

Serial Number Not Recognized

HP’s support site may not recognize the serial number alone for older models like the LaserJet 1160. Here’s what you can do:

Steps to Resolve

  1. Check the product label on the back or inside the toner access door.
  2. You’ll need both:
    • Serial Number (10 characters, starts with 2 letters)
    • Product Number (e.g., Q5927A)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
