Envy 5055 inkjet printer
Other

For about 5yrs have used Yokogawa DL9140 Oscilloscope connected thru USB to HP Deskjet 5550 series inkjet printer. Worked well.  New HP Envy 5055 printer is not seen by scope. OS on scope is some sort of CE Windows. The scope is obsolete so no chance of new drivers for scope's USB.  What is different in the USB ports on the printers?  I am thinking of USB to wireless or USB to Bluetooth converters but feel that there are protocol differences between the two printers even though both are USB.

Any ideas on how to make the new printer work with the old scope?

I have checked user manual of your oscilloscope and there is a note that supported printers are USB 1.0 and PCL

Your old printer is USB 1.0 compatible with USB2.0 but your new printer (like most new printers) is USB 2.0. Not sure you will be able to make any newer model of your printer to work with oscilloscope because they are all USB 2.0

Also, most newer printers are PCL 3 GUI and not sure that oscilloscope can communicate oldschool PCL to new printer language PCL 3 GUI. If by any chance you make USB 2.0 printer to connect the PCL printer language barrier is also a big question.

Thanks Valsimot.  I checked the manual and verified that the scope USB Port is 2.0. So that rules out hardware issues.  I could not see what was happening when I plugged the printer into the scope.  So I connected a hub to the scope and then plugged the printer into the hub.  The green active LED would light up briefly and then a message appears on the scope screen that it can't see a printer.  This confirms in my mind what you were saying that  the scope is talking in PCL to the printer but that the printer only knowing PCL 3 GUI does not respond.  It would be nice if HP could confirm the incompatibility of PCL and PCL 3 GUI.  My solution will probably be to have a PC interface with the scope and then connect to the printer.  Not sure how well this will work.  The scope does have a separate PC  USB connection.  I have never used it though.  Once again thanks for your efforts.

I still believe it's the USB incompatibility, not printer language because when USB is connected the data between 2 devices ( printer and scope) are plane 0 and 1 nothing to do with the PCL yet. Simple binary communication is between 2 USB devices.

Later when image sent to the printer then the image data is translated to PCL so the printer knows what to do.

So if the primary issue is hardware why does the Hub work? Why do recent flash drives have no issue?  The manual says the USB is Rev 2.0 compliant.  It also says further down USB Printer Class Ver. 1.0 compliant.  I think that is what you consider to be the primary issue.  I would consider that a firmware issue meaning it could be changed via a download if the parties involved were interested. Once again thanks for your efforts.  Joe
