HP Color LaserJet M254dw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I'm just a writer who does Computer Assisted Publication and is french so maybe I wo'nt use the words correctly.

I'm currently working on a book that involves both text and images. I'm really not sure that my printer will be up to the task concerning images (I know laserjet is not the best for those). Still, I want to be sure that I've tried everything before buying a another one.

In the process, I need to understand what ICC Profile my printer is using by default. I've read that a lot of desktop printers just use the RVB or SRVB profiles even if they work with CMYK inks. Anyway, maybe it is so obvious that the ICC Profile is not precised in its caracteristics on the HP support website, but I 've seen no mention of it (nor in the HP Smart Application).

Basically : when converting profiles on Photoshop, I need to choose "Fogra29" or "Fogra39", something like that, depending on what my printer is using, right ? Is that ICC ? And how do I know which one I need to use ? If my printer is using RVB, do I still need to convert my files to CMYK ? I hope you now understand why I need this information so, yeah, what profile do I need to use with the HP Color LaserJet M254dw (Windows 10) ?

I'm really trying to understand those things but right know, I'm completly lost. Thanking anyone that can enlight me on the subject.

There is nothing much you can do on low-end printers the printer will manage colour.

The ICC profiles are used in more advanced HP printers. That model doesn't support ICC profiles and the colour management/conversion is done by the printer.

Ok, thank you ! Does it mean that I have to let InDesign manage the colors and not worry about it anyway because there is not so much I can do about it ? Also, when on Photoshop, is the conversion to CMYK gonna help with the look of my prints, beside being able to see a closer result on my monitor ?

Allright, thanks for making that clear 😅

Your printer is supported by the HP Universal Printer Driver and if installed, you can select various color themes as well as producing a custom one with some HP software.
