When I open the "HP Smart" app. it displays a "1 of 2xx" udder my printer icon. When I tab thru these they all show not connected which I expect since I have only 1 printer . Also every time I do this I add to the printer count. What am I doing wrong or what do I have to do to eliminate this?

The app is confused
and
it appears that when the printer is being added, it is not on the network - at least not where HP Smart can find it.
Open HP Smart > Settings >
Scroll down and Forget this printer
I've never seen several "ghost" printers - you may have to do this for "each" of the duplicates.
The latest versions of HP Smart require that you have added your printer to HP Smart / HP Connected.
Click Flag to switch to your region
The printer, once it's added to the HP Smart / HP Connected setup can then be used with HP Smart (Windows or Mobile).
Once that's done, you also have to log into HP Smart application using the credentials used to log into HP Smart / HP Connected.
Open HP Smart
If you have not done so,
Log into the application using your HP Smart / HP Connected userid and password.
Next, add the printer...
HP_Smart_W10_Start_Screen_2
Will that work?
It might - it depends on ...
Which version of the HP Smart app you are running (hopefully the latest),
Why your printer is not on the network,
and
Whether the simple act of making sure the printer is connected / added to HP Smart / HP Connected can fix whatever is going on...

Thank you for the quick response to my issue. I have the latest ver. of "HPsmart" and found the "forget this printer" in a different maner" however selecting it did not delete the "ghost" printer. Thanks again .....

You are welcome.
Another place I know where "ghosts" might show up is in
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers
Want to get of something?
Right-Click on the item and Remove
Be careful of what you remove...
For example, if you have a printer / device named "something - Do Not Delete"
then
leave it alone, this is a printer queue created for Scan.
