Hi @ChaddsFordPat,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I’m sorry to hear about the confusion with your HP 5258—it’s frustrating when it seems ready to print but asks for a fax number instead. Let’s get this resolved so you can print smoothly.
- When selecting the printer in the print dialog box, are you choosing the HP 5258 or the HP 5258 Fax option?
- Are you printing from a specific application, or does the fax prompt appear regardless of the software you use?
- Have you recently set up the fax feature on the printer, or is it a default option?
Let's try these steps.
Select the Correct Printer in the Print Dialog
- When printing, ensure you choose HP 5258 (not HP 5258 Fax) from the list of printers in the print dialog.
- If the fax option is selected by default, you can set the correct printer as the default:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select HP 5258, click Manage, and choose Set as default.
Remove Fax Printer Option
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Locate the HP 5258 Fax printer.
- Right-click and select Remove Device if you do not plan to use the fax feature.
Reinstall the Printer Driver
- Uninstall the current printer software from your computer.
- Visit the HP Support website to download and reinstall the latest driver package for your printer.
Disable Fax in Printer Settings
- Access the printer’s control panel and navigate to Settings > Fax Settings.
- Disable or turn off the fax feature if you do not use it.
Test with Another Application
- Try printing from a different application to rule out software-specific issues. For example, if you’re printing from a browser, test with Word or a PDF viewer.
