I am trying to sync my phone to my new HP Deskjet 2710e.

it has asked for a password for Direct EF HP Deskjet 2700 series.

where do I find this?

To connect to HP Wireless Direct to print without a router print a Network Configuration Page, the information is listed within the Wi-Fi Direct section:

Please note that HP Wi-Fi Direct is meant to print without a router with a direct connection to the printer, if you do have an home network, connecting both the mobile device and printer to the wireless network will allow printing to the printer with no need of any temporary connection to the printer:
