Why am I paying for ink and HP has control of my purchase?

I've been HP user since pc came into existence but why am I paying HP per month to allow me to print "x" amount of pages on a printer that I paid for from Staples.  I need to know other printers that I can purchase and don't have to pay anyone to allow me to only print "x" amount of pages per month, when I have a ream of paper in my home.  This is not it.
