HP ENVY
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I am beyond frustrated. I've found countless conversations on this support site from other people whose photo tray is also useless. It is greyed out. I have taken paper out, put it back in, I did the 60-second unplug, I faced Mecca and howled. Nothing is working. Why give us a paper tray that does not function? Branding Fail 101. HP = Horrible Printers.

HP ENVY Photo 7155

When I look on the printer's screen, the Photo Tray is grayed out and cannot be selected. There is HP 4" x 6" paper in the tray. When I try to choose Photo Tray when printing from apps like Photoshop, the image still prints from the main tray. I have tried printing from the HP Smart app and still, the printer will only use the main tray.

I have unplugged and reset the machine. My firmware is up to date.

Try the below instructions to print using photo tray-

Step 1: Load photo paper in the photo tray

Load photo paper in the photo paper tray to help ensure that it is picked up by the printer correctly.

  1. Turn the printer on if it is not already on.
  2. Pull the photo tray inside the input tray toward you to open it as far as possible.

    NOTE:

If you do not see the photo tray inside the input tray, remove the output tray, and then open the photo tray.

  3. Slide the paper width guides to their outermost positions.

  4. Load the photo paper with the short edge forward and the print side down into the photo tray.

    NOTE:

For photo paper with a perforated tab, load the paper in the tray print-side down with the perforated tab closest to you.

  5. Slide the paper forward until it stops.

    NOTE:

Make sure that the stack of photo paper is not higher than the top edges of the paper width guides.

  6. Slide the paper width guides inward so that they lightly rest against the edges of the photo paper and make sure that the photo paper is centered in the tray.

  7. Reinstall the output tray on the input tray, if you removed it, and then push the input tray into the printer until it locks into place.

Step 2: Set up the print job

Adjust the print settings in the app or operating system you are printing from to use the photo paper tray.

Windows 10 Photos app

Change the print settings in the Windows 10 Photos app so that paper in the photo paper input tray is used.

Changing the print settings to match the print job

  1. Open the photo in the app, click the menu icon , and then click Print.

  2. Select the following settings for the print job:

    • Source: Select Photo Tray

    • Paper Size: Select 10x15cm/4x6in or 4x6in

    • Type: Select HP Photo Papers or Other photo inkjet papers

    • Photo size: Select Full Page

    • Fit: Select Fill Page

  3. Click Print.

If the photo still does not print from the photo tray, go to HP ENVY, DeskJet Printers - 'Out of Paper' Displays and Printer Does Not Pick Paper

Also, refer to - https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04390954Cannot Print From Photo Tray

Let me know how this goes!

I have jumped through all these diagnostic hoops. The only way that the machine will recognize the photo tray is when it is empty.

It still prints from the Main Tray!!!!!!

The paper size is selected 8.5x11, have you tried changing the paper size to 4x6?

What are the type, size, and weight of the paper you're using?

Let me know!

I don't see an option I see in HP Smart that allows me to specify paper size. I am printing a document that is EXACTLY 4" x 6".  In the print prefs for HP smart, I have looked in the options for Media & Quality, Layout, Paper Handling, Cover Page and Supply Levels. I see no mention of paper size.

In the MacOS Printers and Scanners preferences (see image above), there is no option for 4 x 6 photo).

So where exactly do I set paper size?????

HP Recommended

I see only 1 option in Photoshop that allows me to choose a 4x6 paper size, and it ONLY appears if I choose Paper Handling and check the Scale To FIt Paper Size option. And yes, it printed from the Photo Tray - BUT it shrunk the image down to postage-stamp size. I need to be able to print images at the size I want.

Thud! thud! Thud! (head banging on desk)

Let's try and uninstall HP Smart.

If installed from HP.com please delete from /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/HP Smart. Then delete HP Smart from the Applications folder and reinstall from the Mac App Store

If downloaded from the Mac App Store please remove /Users/Username/Library/Containers/HP Smart/containers.plist and then launch HP Smart from the Applications folder and go through the setup again.

and then reinstall it from the App store.

If the issue persists, install HP Easy Start

Hope this helps!
