HP DeskJet 4220e All-in-One Printer

I can print from Photos in colour, I can copy from the printer in colour but when I try to print from the Mac screen either from Mail or Safari it only print sin B&W. Same if I try to print a file in colour. Printer setting only offer B&W or B&W draft. No colour setting visible.

Hi @Neil2712,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP DeskJet 4220e is encountering an issue with color settings when printing from your Mac. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

Check Printer Settings on Mac:

  • Open the document or image you want to print.
  • Go to File > Print or press Command + P.
  • In the print dialog box, click on the Show Details button if it's not already expanded.
  • Look for a Presets or Paper Handling section and make sure that color options are not set to black and white. Sometimes, you might find a Color option under a different drop-down menu (like Printer Features or Color Matching).

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your HP DeskJet 4220e from the list and click Options & Supplies.
  • Click on the Driver tab and ensure that you have the latest driver installed. If not, download and install the latest driver from the HP website.

Check Print Settings in HP Smart App:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your Mac.
  • Select your printer and go to Printer Settings.
  • Ensure that the color printing settings are correctly configured.

Reset Printing System:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the list of printers and select Reset Printing System.
  • This will remove all printers and scanners, so you’ll need to add your HP DeskJet 4220e again afterward.

Check Mac Color Profiles:

  • Go to System Preferences > Displays > Color.
  • Ensure that the correct color profile is selected for your display.

Check Ink Levels:

  • Make sure your color ink cartridges are not empty or low. Even if your printer copies and prints photos in color, low ink levels can sometimes affect how other prints are handled.

Test with Different Applications:

  • Try printing from different applications (like Word or Preview) to see if the issue persists across all programs.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
