Dear Sir,

Please read all; as I almost gave up until I did it the right way!  I registered just so I can thank you and add teh small (but important) tip I ran into to make this work.

I cannot express in words how much your step by step HP Laserjet 4000 driver installation on a WINDOWS 10 / 64 helped out!

With my children being home schooled due to schools being closed (In Germany); I pulled out and  opened my trusty 1999 HP  Laserjet 4000 printer from the attic,  and tried to install it, so I could print their homework assignments, etc. I tried to find and install drivers everywhere, with no success...until you !  Thank you !

BUT: I almost gave up on your instructions as well because on simple thing that I think folks should know about:  AS I followed instructions, everything installed, or I thought so, as you pointed out.  However, at test print page, I received only errors.  I tried different drivers as well (the PCL 5 the 4000 PS, etc, but returned to the one you recommended PCL 6).  The thing is that my desktop running windows 10 does not have a parallel port hook up for the printer, so I had to buy an adapter from parallel to USB , and plugged it in one of the USB ports in the desktop in the back.  So, when the PC tried to install th printer, it was automatically using the LPT1 port...! Yes, I had to pick the USB Virtual port in the drop down list from the Ports one can pick to install the printer; and voila: the test print page came out!  So, if you have a USB port and no parallel hookups in your desktop, laptop, you must pick manually the USB Port and not the default port the PC will pick from you!  I thought I should share this.  Thanks, [Personal Information Removed], Alex US Army

This solution worked perfectly for me today! I installed a 20 year old HP Laserjet 4000 on a new Windows 10 PC with absolutely no issues. Excellent job creating this solution and am extremely glad I found it.

For anyone curious, my company bought me this printer when I moved to a home office in 2000 (along with a HP Color Laserjet 3600DN which I still have not been able to install on Win10). I nursed this 4000 along performing all the recommended maintenance which was no easy task. I did it because it is equipped with 3 bulk paper trays, a duplexer, and envelop feeder. I've had a couple of no longer available plastic pieces break off of the door over the toner cartridge but I was able to rig a workable solution.

Well done to whomever is responsible.

It's probably not a real economical printer these days but it does everything I need it to do which is far less than what I needed before I retired.

So glad you got it working!  I love my HP Laserjet 4000 !  I wished it had more memory to buffer (or somebody that can teach me how to upgrade the buffer memory, if possible).

Have not yet used the duplex function as I am not sure how to use it...(i.e. do I place the printed paper on one side face up or face down, and do I place it on the tray heads in or bottom text in, etc)  But anyway, its slow speed is a small price to pay for the lowest cost/print and quality I get, even for pics ! The range of gray color is awesome!

Perhaps is not economical for power it uses, but its stand by is minimal!  A toner for 10,000 pages is 19 Euro in Germany, and for that, I cannot complain...  Since the CoVID stuff, I must home school my kids, and the printer has been a God sent...

Thanks again to the guy that made this installation possible

I have a similar situation as JChrisK. My company bought me the LJ4000 back around 2000 and it came with a duplexer unit. Took it to my remote office in 2005 and when I retired in 2010 it somehow ended up in my home office. Go figure. Anyway, the duplexer unit sticks out the back of the LJ4000. It is huge. It adds about an extra 1/3 to the depth of the printer. You would know it if you have one. If you do, it is accessed in the print options. When you print a document you would check the "Print on both sides" option. As for the buffer you can download the LJ4000 user manual which will tell you how to install more memory. I've seen the memory for sale on Ebay but I don't don't know how much trust I would put in that.

Good Luck

Wow,

Great, thanks for the tips!  I will check it out!  I do have the duplex option in the printing menu.  As for the memory, I sure will search for the manual and the internal memory offers!

Thanks a lot!  if/when I am successful, I will let you kow!

HP Color 3600 can be installed into Win10 x64.

I had google and installed 3600 before but i can't remember clearly about it.
