HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer

Two years ago I "automatically" let the 8715 do a firmware update from the touchscreen. The update made ~$200  worth of genuine HP ink cartridges unusable. HP said sorry there is nothing we can do. They said that they periodically put out "firmware upgrades" to force customers to replace their ink cartridges.  Today I got another firmware upgrade message. Should I wait until I have used all my ink cartridges? Or, is this one safe?

Hi @Mike2636

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I see that you had an issue with one of your printers in the past after updating the firmware.

However, HP printer firmware is software that allows our printers to print. Like a smartphone with an operating system, HP printers contain firmware written by HP software developers that make the devices operate. Without firmware, most electronic devices we use daily wouldn't be able to work.

If your printer is working fine you can hold the update for now and install it once you consume all the ink cartridges in stock with you.

Thanx for the belated and somewhat condescending answer. It's amazing to me that HP "updates" firmware to make people buy more of their overpriced ink. Rest assured that when I start to run low on ink I'll be shopping for a new printer that doesn't say HP on it.

Hi @Mike2636,

I see that you have a query related to the non-HP ink cartridges you are using on your printer and that might stop working if you install the firmware update.

My inquiry was concerning genuine HP cartridges. The last firmware update made my genuine HP cartridges unusable. When I contacted support their attitude was "too bad, buy new ones". I have never used anything but genuine HP cartridges. Firm "updates" seem to be designed to make spare cartridges the user has on hand obsolete and unusable. This realization usually occurs at the worst possible time.  HP's arrogance has lost this customer forever.
