I've never seen anything like this before using Windows Update.  This HP Printer update has been failing for weeks.  Someone from HP replied in a different post, "Windows Update error 800f020b while trying to install updates, an update that you're trying to install applies to a device that isn't connected to the computer. I would suggest that you connect the printer to your device, turn the device ON and try to install the updates."

What do you mean by "connect the printer"?  It's a wireless printer and I'm able to print.  It's connected.  Are you saying the printer needs to be physically connected by cable?

Thanks.

Are you talking about the Windows Update Troubleshooter?  I've tried that several times.  A problem has never been detected.  When I run the update, it fails because it says the printer is not connected and it is (wireless.)

You need to provide some more details:

  1. Windows Version?
  2. What kind of printer are we talking about here?
The exact printer name is required.

I'm on Windows 10.  It's a fairly new printer. Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw.  I appreciate the help.  Maybe the printer needs to be physically connected to the computer with a cable instead of wireless?  I just tried connecting the printer to the network via ethernet, but it didn't work.  Something else is interesting when it tries to install, it says "HP - Printer - 20.79.1.6692".  When I google that, it takes me to a Microsoft Update Catalog page and it indicates that it is Windows 8.1 drivers that the update is trying to install.
